:: The Perfect Day in Lake Como ::

Lake Como you ask?
Wasn’t that last July?
Yes! Yes it was!
But ……better late than never?

There were a few more things from our trip that I needed to share with you!
The main one being the best day of our trip when we chartered a boat and went to lunch on Comacina Island at the restaurant there called Locanda dell’Isola Comacina.

So even if you don’t read anything else – charter a boat to spend a few hours cruising around Lake Como and go to dell’Isola Comacina!

To catch you up since it had been so long, we went to Italy with Kip’s family last summer for a wedding. We were lucky to go to Amsterdam for a few days on our own beforehand, and spend a day in Milan, and then we ventured to a beautiful little lake town called Erba for the wedding. Erba was about 45 minutes from the town of Como.

Following the insanely gorgeous wedding weekend, we drove to Tremezzo, one of the lake towns in Como. Prior to this trip, I didn’t know much about Lake Como. Ya know, that George and Amal and fancy people go there but that is about it.

There are a bunch of different places you can stay and the lake is much bigger than I thought. Not at all like the lakes we have here! (Well…. the lakes here in Georgia, not like Lake Michigan or anything…)

So, since I didn’t plan this trip, I won’t have as detailed of a “trip planning” post as I did the first time that Kip and I went to Italy!

So, Lake Como’s shoreline has a ton of gorgeous little towns all over. We stayed in Tremezzo, but there is also Bellagio, Varenna, Laglio, Menaggio, and I’m sure 9 million more. Oh, and Como obviously. Which we spent a day trip there during the wedding weekend I would not recommend – it’s much more city like and didn’t have the Old Italian Feel.
Tremezzo faces Bellagio and those two make a little triangle with Verenna as well. I feel like those are the most popular, but not sure? From what I experienced I would stay in Bellagio or Tremezzo. Bellagio seemed smaller and ‘more Italian’ than Tremezzo.

ANYWAYS. I can go into more detail in another post! (I know what you’re thinking…..really? a year later and you still haven’t.?? …… watching Bravo takes up a lot of time people what can I say?!)
BUT to get right to the good stuff.

The best day of our family vacation was when we were lucky enough to charter a gorgeous wooden Chris-Craft to take us around the lake and see different spots.
And yes, that is our boat with the handsome blonde Italian driver. Even the driver was gorgeous! Seriously!
We cruised around the lake all today seeing the gorgeous homes and learning more about the lake from our tour guide, and we stopped in Varenna, went to see the gorgeous Villa del Balbianello, and then were taken to the Comacina Island for lunch. She wouldn’t tell us what to expect – because the island has a history that the owner tells you about – but it was the most perfect meal and day.

You sit outside overlooking the lake and the gorgeous grounds and course after course of pure heaven comes out family style. The wine flows the entire meal (always important for me) and it was such a perfect leisurely Italian meal. There’s parmesean wheels the size of your head, the most insanely delicious onions, lemons, vegetables, chicken, you name it! I absolutely loved every minute of it!

If you are taking a trip to Lake Como, renting one of those BEAUTIFUL BOATS and spending half a day cruising around with lunch at this destination is absolute MUST MUST MUST.
I promise. You’ll thank me!

I’ll share my photos possibly in another post, but we absolutely loved jetting over to Bellagio for an afternoon as well!
And a warning to all my Americans that keep their house as 68 degrees like me. Italy in July is no joke. And our house had no AC. But it’s worth it.
So, so worth it.
