:: Italy Travel Diary : Florence ::

March 1, 2016

:: Italy Travel Diary : Florence ::
:: FLORENCE ::

huh? what’s that you say?
the huge trip you talked about for forever leading up to it, and then only posted about half of it so far?
YES.
I’m back to continue The Italy Travel Diaries.
finalllllly.
I have so many friends going to Italy this year that I knew I needed to get back on it and talk about Florence, Positano, and Rome.
and next up is Positano the absolute favorite and I could cry I want to be there right now.

after Venice and Siena,
we took a train and arrived in Florence.

we had originally planned on taking a cab from the train station to our hotel,

but we took screen shots on our phone and it was easy enough to find it.
for our hotel, we found it through the Rick Steves book.
After we unloaded our bags at the hotel, we immediately ventured out.
We rounded the corner from the hotel and the Duomo was just towering down the little road.
  It was about a three minute walk to the Duomo and we started out with Rick Steves audio tour because so many friends had recommended it.  It was a great walking tour to get acquainted with the city.

We walked to one of the locations where we could get the Firenze Card which we had decided would be well worth the 72 Euro per person because the lines for everything in Florence are nuts.  Luckily friends and everything we read confirmed that this was the right thing to do.
Definitely, definitely get this card! Otherwise, you will spend all of your time waiting in lines and not seeing anything of Florence.

We went across the Ponte Vecchio, and looked at all of the pretty jewelry in the windows as we went, and settled on a spot for lunch outside of the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens.
The Gardens were so gorgeous.  It was such a fun afternoon wandering around and not doing anything.  I was also reading Dan Brown’s Inferno so it was fun to be in the place I was reading so much about.

…… my jumping shot was a complete and utter fail. and I’m very special.
we stopped at a little place between our hotel and the Duomo for apertivo before showering for dinner.
We went to dinner at Il Porcospino, a restaurant our neighbor raved about from when she was studying abroad in Florence.  She e-mailed ahead and told Franco to be expecting us and it was such a wonderful dinner.  He just brought food out for us, no menus, and it was a perfect first night in Florence.

The next morning we got up early to go to see The David.  The Academia was right behind our hotel so we got there in no time, and even though we went right at 9 (or whatever time it opened) there were lines already.  The Firenze Card was a lifesaver again, but still about a 15 minute wait.
I’m so glad we got in early because there was hardly anyone indoors and it made seeing the David much much better.   I couldn’t believe how big it was in person.
Then we climbed The Duomo – oh my gosh – tight spaces getting up there.  Like, crazy tight.  It was nuts.
worth it at the top though.
at this point in the trip Kip kept asking me when I would stop making us climb things.  (little did he know what was to come with the stairs in Positano…..)

after The Duomo we did a ton of museums…. most of which we could have done without.  They were just so crowded and it was lots of wandering and none of the rest of the day was as a great as The Boboli Gardens or The David (to us).  It was all wonderful but it just gets to be the same religious art 9,000 times after a little bit.
We did Uffizi and got super cheap pizza and wine after which was amazing.  So glad we stumbled upon the little place and not a clue what the name was but there was a cute couple our age in Ole Miss polos that seemed just as excited to find a quick cheap yummy bite.

We went to the leather school (after getting seriously lost finding it) after lunch, but no one was working when we were there so it was a bust.  Their leather belts for Kip were a lot, so we passed, and luckily found two cute ones on the way to dinner that night for much cheaper for him to take home.
We also stopped at the Galileo Museum because I am a science lover and what could be better I thought that Kip would enjoy it, but it was just weird.  Like, a lot of vagina (or allota fagina) and pregnancy things.
I was like “wheres the finger that Rick Steves said was here? Lets just look at that and get out of here”

we ended our last night there with Gelato after a dinner surrounded by locals at I Che Ce Ce Trattoria while we strolled past the Duomo one last time at night to our hotel.

We loved Florence, but it did get exhausting.  I can completely see why it was so many peoples favorite places.  We saw so much in the two days we were there that it kind of started to become a blur, but it was an amazing highlight to the trip.  I can’t get over how these pictures do no justice to how beautiful the buildings are there.

So, definitely do the Rick Steves Renaissance Walk – the app is so helpful for so many different things and we loved it for Florence to get acquainted.
We also loved the Boboli Gardens for wandering.

Hotel Information :
We stayed at Hotel Loggioto Dei Serviti.  (website)
It was about a 3 minute walk to the Duomo, and when you rounded the corner from the square out hotel was in, you could see it immediately towering overhead in the distance. I could not believe how beautiful, and how BIG, it was.
I did like our hotel, but the square was definitely not a lively one and I’m sure there are better places you could stay.  But the room was massive and very old Italian.  The inside of the hotel was beautiful – the hallways and stairwells and everything.  And breakfast was great too 🙂  So overall we were happy with it.

Below I am including the two pages from my nerd-alert word document that I combined from all of your recommendations along with my friends emails and things like that.  So this was what I had on hand before our trip and hopefully can help some of you with your trip plans!

:: FLORENCE ::

Sights +
Activities
*Renaissance Walk : Rick Steves
Start at Duomo, can do self guided
walking tour, hit all the main sights – theres a free audio tour in the app
*The Accademia that houses the David
book a tour for the
accademia, massive lines
*Dumo : have euros to enter
* Giottos Tower : less crowded to climb than The Duomo and
with great views
*Scuola del Cuoio (here) which is a
leather school.  This was a definite highlight of our time in Florence.
You can stroll through the building and see true leather artisans at
work, learning the ins and outs of the trade.  The leather they work with
is the best of the best, and you really feel like you are in the presence of
artists.  There are photos on the wall of celebrities who have been there.
And, it’s completely free to enter, which is refreshing when you are on a
two week trip where everything, everything, costs money.
* Pizzale Michaelangelo
From there we made our way up the 26742 steps
(or maybe it just seemed that way) to Piazzale Michaelangelo (
here).  There was a cathedral up at the very
top where we stopped to sit on a bench and just take the glorious view in.
If I had it to do again, you better believe I’d go armed with a book and
a bottle of red.
*Piazza
Santo Spirito for nighttime
from
Amy : One night we just happened upon the Piazza Santo Spirito when walking
around – definitely a local young person spot to drink outside and really fun
people watching!
*
Ponte Vecchio : the famous bridge, especially romantic at night
*
Galileo Science Museum : has 3 of his fingers! Telescopes , gadets, inventions
*Leather
Shopping + Visit The Leather SChool great leather, leather jackets. Rick Steves
has a few places in particular recommended, can get amazing jacket for 250-300.
*Uffitzi Museum

Food
* I’ Che’ C’e’ C’e Trattoria We got advice from one of
Ryan’s wholesalers who grew up in Florence. It is a MUST! No tourists, except us of course.  Off the beaten
path, very cool. Once again our hotel called to make reservations. The balsamic
beef was amazing.
* Il Porcospino – The
Porcupine – Glenn and Angelina’s favorite place
*
Cibreo  (it’s a country club like place that we had to join – I think it
was like 10 euro pp but it was worth it) was another restaurant recommendation
we got from Ryan’s Italian guy.  It is family style and they just bring
things out and they bring small dishes to your table. The wine is on tap.
(from
online : Il Cibreo is THE restaurant that you have to go to in Florence; it
ranks as one of our favorites in all of Italy. We prefer the trattoria, over
the more formal ristorante and café across the street (the formal ristorante
& café are very good, but very expensive, and a little stuffy); in
any case, they all use the same kitchen, the only difference being that the
trattoria menu is more limited. Il Cibreo’s menu is based on traditional Tuscan
cooking, before the introduction of pasta. The menu sticks by classic dishes —
e.g., polenta, minestra di pane, pappa al pomodoro — but they are typically
done with concentrated flavors in a more sophisticated way than your typical
Italian restaurant. The secondi are also highly recommended, including their
collo di pollo ripieno (stuffed chicken neck), polpetti di vitella (veal
meatballs), and salsicce con i fagioli (sausage and beans) Note that the
Trattoria does not take reservations, so keep this in mind, because you will
likely have to wait for a bit to be seated.
* Aqua al Due – * this is where EVERYONE has recommended * You
MUST go here. There will be a wait but order their pasta sampler and blueberry
steak with a bottle of brunello wine, it will fill you up but it is amazing!
Osteria vini e vecchi sapori – need reservations, amazing tiny hole in the wall!
Le colonnine – quattro formaggio pizza and the
Nutella calzone dessert
La Fagolio (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g187895-d1068024-Reviews-Del_Fagioli-Florence_Tuscany.html) and ordered the steak for two. Best meal of my life. I think
it’s cash only and I would highly recommend a reservation. It was
incredible.
*
Il Pizzaiuolo – best pizza ever had, per cupcakes and cashmere
Il Cibreo Trattoria: Via dei Macci, 122R;
Ristorante: Via dei Macci 118r; Telephone 055 234 1100; closed Sundays and
Mondays.
*Perche No! in Florence (here)
voted one of top gelato
places in the world
*Il Latini – make a reservation, its about
$45 euro per person but is about 5 courses, includes wine and is delicious
* Westin Bar for great views
* Lunch: Trattoria Mario (you sit with
locals, close to Mercato Centrale)
I looked up on the map and this is an 8
minute walk from our hotel
*Procacci – Wine and Truffle Bar

Tips
* We
walked to the Galleria dell’Accademia (where David is) and instead of waiting
in the crazy lines, we bought tickets for a particular time and went and
explored/had lunch and then came back and got right in at our designated time.
* We got the Firenze card which I highly recommend. Let’s
you jump the line and get into all of the museums.

* You MUST make reservations in advance (well in advance)
for the Uffizi Gallery especially (and Accademia)

:: weekend things ::

I hope you all had a great weekend!!

Ours was super busy but a great one.

Friday I had a jam packed day since I hadn’t had one of my do-it-all-Fridays in Chicago since before I went to Atlanta.

I started the day with Pure Barre and it was great to be back in a class (and barely walking Saturday) then had a much needed massage, and finally got my hair cut.  It was a great “me day” and I finished it off with dinner out at The Dawson.  I had never been to The Dawson and I loved it – the patio in the summer looks like it will be so nice, and the food was all delicious!

my top from friday is on super sale

:: sanctuary layered tank :: two colors, super sale 50% off now under $30!

runs big, order down a size

Saturday we went to Home Depot to get some things for some home DIY projects (more on that below, just call me Martha) and then had friends over for cocktails before dinner.

These lemon cookies/crackers with blueberry goat cheese from Trader Joe’s is legitimately heroin.  Legit.  Laced with crack.  No one can stop once they have a bite.

Dinner was at AMK in Bucktown – also amazing;  super unhealthy menu entirely, and damn were the fried cheese curds delicous.  kips duck fat pot pie was also amazing and I had a pimento cheese grilled cheese.

the burger looked so, so good but I gave those up for Lent so had to salivate watching my friends husband eat his.

Sunday was spent working on the house.

So, we have never liked our kitchen and master bathroom cabinets, but we had to move in the day we closed and never got around to painting anything or doing anything about it.  Kip had wanted to paint the cabinets himself and I was always like ehhhmmmm that is a BIG ASS project and I don’t think it will look good at all unless done by a professional which was a lot of money we could spend on other things.  (Kip is SUPER handy.  He can build anything and wire anything – you name it.  He likes to constantly remind me that he built his college house over the summer…. but STILL.  There are certain things that just look better when left to professionals! Anyways……)

SO

while we were at Home Depot looking at backsplash and paint colors, a customer was at the paint counter with this cabinet painting kit.

He raved about it.  And then the paint lady raved about it.

And then I looked at Kip and knew hours of work were ahead of us.

But he’s been wanting to do this since we first looked at the house,

and if it looks awful we’ll hire someone to come redo all of it

and I know it will look great.

this is the product that we bought.

So we decided to start with the bathroom cabinets to test it out, and we finished everything last night except the top protective coat.

I forgot to take a before pic before Kip took the doors off, but I have some somewhere and will post a before and after when its all done.

in the original listing photo below you can the under sink cabinet below, and then we also hung one on the wall above the shower curtain because we have ZERO STORAGE that was the same ugly color.  Anything to help this bathroom.

It honestly looks amazing.

I wish we had known about this sooner.

It was a.lot.of.work. though.

next up: kitchen (stole this from listing pics as well)

and the kitchen will be 10x more to do than the bathroom…..bathroom was 4 doors, kitchen has 22 doors and drawers so I’m scared, but hoping we can have it finished by next Sunday.

#prayforus

I’m such a Martha Stewart DIY’er now!

…… and a few other things:

My Rocksbox subscription this month is amazing.

My favorite piece: this Kendra Scott necklace.

use code tayloroshayxoxo for your first month free!

I’m tearing through Luckiest Girl Alive and am so mad that I couldn’t read for a few hours on Sunday and finish it because of the cabinets, so hopefully this week!

This tee from Old Navy is incredible.

It is so soft and thin, has the perfect side slit, perfect longer in the back length and so flattering.

Also, the price is perfect.  I ordered it in all colors because I wore the grey three days in a row this weekend!

:: COFFEE TALK ::

February 25, 2016

:: COFFEE TALK ::
discuss amongst ya-selves…..

:: BACHELOR ::
oh, hometowns.  the dates where we get to see the people who bred the crazy betches.
always a good time.
first up, amanda ‘teen mom’ hometown.
I don’t know which had my jaw drop to the floor longer – gladiator sandals or ben’s damn tight pants in the intro, to then be followed by his damn tight SHORTS on the beach to meet amanda and her kids.
BEN.  there are children present  millions of americans with eyeballs who do not need to see your pasty man thighs.
LOCK IT UP.
and then I was just in physical pain thinking about amanda’s poor little girls feet after playing on the beach in GLADIATOR SANDALS.
huh?
first of all, why are these even made for those little legs? I feel like my husband commenting on people putting their small dogs in outfits, but seriously, this is just not right or necessary.
your child can be a fashionista without gladiator sandals.  especially on sand. I just can’t.
only in orange county I suppose.
ANYWAYS, I love Amanda and she deserves a 10 – but this is just never gonna happen.

next up, Lauren B.
lauren b’s hometown is hands down the best.
they eat at a bunch of food trucks and then go to a really pretty liquor bar.
YES.  PLEASE.

this is how my any normal human falls in love.
how pissed would you be if you were on this show and never called your name the entire time, but instead your name with an initial, even when NO ONE ELSE named Lauren is left and I can’t even tell you what other chick was named Lauren if my life depended on it.
oh wait, as I type that, I think it was the chick with really good hair? but WHO CARES just call her Lauren ABC!
I guess being called Lauren B. is a better alternative than being called “baby lolo”.
lauren’s family wins the most normal award with that rare exception of baby lolo commentary.
ugh.
and ben…. seriously….
I have never seen a grown ass man cry this much.  Except perhaps Jason Mesnick’s season, where he enjoys hurling himself over a balcony crying.

but instead you even cry when answering simple questions like what is it you like about my sister.
Ben, I’m a cryer, and I’m looking at you like you’re crazy

date with Caila.
stop saying Mommy and Daddy Caila! ahhhh!
editors note : these two are perfect for each other
the way she talks has officially began to make me crazy.  her speech is affected and she talks as though she is speaking to a four year old about something a four year old would get excited about but that the rest of the grown adult population wouldn’t blink twice at.
ya know what I mean?

perfectly nice family I’m sure, but the mommy and daddy talk combined with the toy factory stuff and a million other things are making me feel uncomfortable.
actually…. perhaps its that caila kind of talks like a child, got all excited about coloring and building toy houses, and calls her parents mommy and daddy repeatedly….
yeah I think I know why my like for her dissipated this week…..

the date with JoJo kicks off with flowers….. from her ex boyfriend.
hmmmmm….. how did her ex boyfriend know what day she would be home from filming and at her apartment at the exact hour she waits for Ben to arrive?
these producers are shady as hell.  Lifetime’s show UnReal, the bachelor-mockery-scripted show, has got it RIGHT.
when I saw the preview for hometowns last week, I immediately recognized JoJo’s hot brother from Ready For Love, because I am psychotic and have an insane mental capacity for storing BS.
Ready For Love was an NBC show created by Eva Longoria that I was in love with, that no one else in the world watched and was cancelled mid-season out of nowhere, and the rest of it played out online on Hulu.  Who made sure to watch every single week on Hulu after it got cancelled?
THIS GUY.

It was great.  And Shaindy, the crazy ex-miss USA, whom I also psychotically recognized immediately when SHE appeared on THAT reality show, made it ten times better.
BUT I DIGRESS.

hot brother was all about judging ben for being on a reality dating show and dating a bunch of women, and he should!

hot brother only started with like 10 or 15 girls not 25 so he is completely classy and a step above this Ben guy trying to date his sister who cries about all of his dates all day long.

we all know who I would pick for the win this week. JoJo.  JoJo’s Mom.
 Her mom chugs champagne straight from the bottle in the kitchen.
So, her family meets my requirements.

I love how calm Amanda is about her getting dumped.  She’s like whatever you aren’t good enough for me anyway, but hey you know what would have been nice, telling me back at home so I didn’t have to leave my daughters and have someone else try to lace up their gladiator sandals because its really difficult to do.

More importantly, we are SO CLOSE to The Women Tell All.
I can’t wait until I can see even just the preview for it!

:: RHOBH ::

this week’s episode, I don’t really have that much to say about.
(except the ending was awkward and Lisa Vanderpump lit-tra-lee cannot ever be apologetic for anything.  anything.

but yes, all you LVP lovers ‘Eileen is too emotional blah blah blah’.  true, but the only thing Eileen is guilty of is wearing the most hideous dress to ever be seen in RHOBH  history to erica jane’s BBQ last week)

i digress,
the previews for the rest of the season I’m like WOAH HEY DAMN WOAH HEY NOW.
there’s sheyite coming from everyone, at everyone, to anyone.
I’m scared.
can’t wait.

:: VANDERPUMP RULES ::

I’ve decided that Britanny, Jax’s adorable but must be dumb as rocks girlfriend to be with Jax must be using him just as much as he uses her and walks all over her.
No one, I pray, is stupid enough to put up with all of the stuff he puts her through, and risk getting every STD in the books, unless they are getting something.
She must want some Bravolebrity Fame and I guess she also wanted some boobs.

One of the more repulsive things to witness Jax do (I mean not really in the grand scheme of Jax, but still, for a normal person its awful) is watching him tell her what size breasts to get and tell her what to do to her body and tell her that if he is paying for them he is getting what he wants.
these people are SICKKKK.
but this show is sickeningly good. and I watch it sooooo…… I know I know, I’m sick. just in a different way then them.  so I’ll live with myself.

highlight of this week was watching Ariana and Kristin having a bitch fight about HOW SERIOUSLY THEY TAKE SKETCH COMEDY.
(cue me, crying laughing, its just SO. DAMN. GOOD.)
ariana is PEEEEESED that kristin did sketch comedy the other night. and she didn’t see it, but it wasn’t even funny.
“I take sketch comedy very seriously, so it offends me when people think they can just do it.”

oh no wait wait wait wait!!
perhaps the highlight was James!
 “I’m working on a Pump CD. It’s basically 10 songs composed, written and produced by me. It’s pretty much my greatest accomplishment I’ve done in my life yet. I’m very ambitious and talented in what I’m doing. I don’t mean to sound conceited, but I’m the white f**king Kanye West.”

excuse me while I wipe the stream of tears off my cheeks from crying laughing
….. oh my gosh this show is just too good.

:: MAZEL ::
to the final 4 this week on the bachelor.

did you see how they all smiled at each other when they walked in and you could tell they wanted to talk but the @$$hole producers don’t let them talk until later?
they’re all so nice and nice to each other this season!
it’s refreshing.
now if only ben would stop crying……

EDITORS NOTE :
as always, ignore my own blatant grammatical errors whilst I make fun of others poor grammar during coffee talk on a weekly basis.
#hypocrite  #sorryimnotsorry
I write these posts late at night while simultaneously watching Bravo, taking snapchats of my snoring husband, and making to do lists of everything I was supposed to do and didn’t do that day and likely won’t do the next day either.  or the day after that.

:: makeover monday : master bedroom ::
I finally finished the makeover of our master bed and couldn’t be happier.

I loved our Crane + Canopy bedding from the start – silky smooth, with amazing little details like a zipper closure instead of the annoying buttons and ties to keep the duvet in place.  But I needed to find some little details to really complete the look.
(or as my husband would say, I needed to find more giant pillows that we do not sleep on and small pillows that serve no use except to fill our floor at night. yep. preach)

here was the bed before, with just the new sheets, headboard, and mattress.

To switch things up, I switched the duvet to the printed side.  I have been flipping it back and forth every month or so, so that way it’s like a constant new look.

I added three large navy euro shams, and had been searching and searching for something with a pop of red when I came across the Cuddles Please pillow.  We also have the Chicago skyline picture above the headboard from Minted that I love.

Navy Euroshams (steal of the century)

thank you to crane and canopy for the beautiful bedding that I absolutely love!

:: see ya in a week ::

February 16, 2016

:: see ya in a week ::

just wanted to check in to let you know about a week away from blogging and binge tv watching this week.
(I have missed everything….literally haven’t seen one show! It’s always good to know when important things occur I am capable of living a normal life….. who knew?)

I will be MIA this week because I have been home in Atlanta since Friday helping my mom move into a new house.

It’s an emotional week, as any move will be, but it will be great in the end.  The house holds such a special place in my heart.  It was a dream house for my parents and they put so much of their personal touches into it. I’m so lucky I was able to get ready for my wedding there and that my mom was able to stay there for all of these years.  She will be back closer to friends and my sister and I can’t wait to see what she does with the new home.

Packing everything up and seeing so many photos and memories brings up so many smiles and also a lot of tears.  There are so many things of my dads and his memory was everywhere.  Going through notes and cards from him and pictures of all of us growing up has been overwhelming in a good way.
Right when things would be getting tough, one of us would find something, like this note from my dad that my mom found cleaning out a box.

I haven’t lived at home really since I went to college, and then I moved straight to Chicago the day after I graduated Miami of Ohio.  It was always a comforting place to go back to, where it would feel like nothing had changed, and I know the new house will feel just like home soon too.

Soooo I’ll be off all week crying, doing some heavy lifting, laughing, spending time w my family and extra time with my sweet little nephew, and grateful that my parents were able to build such an incredible place that made them so happy and will always hold so many memories for me.

Mmmmmmmmk enough rambling at 11 PM and I’m not re-reading it.
 I need to go lift heavy things for my mom and pregnant sister and then have a random burst of hysterics and then complain about how my back hurts.

And then eat some chick fil a.

Every day.

Because I can.
