:: Italy Travel Diaries : Positano Part One ::

April 5, 2016

:: Italy Travel Diaries : Positano Part One ::
image

One of the best parts of our trip to Italy, if not THE best part, was our stay in Positano.
It is just as magical and beautiful as it looks in pictures.
Everything abut it was perfection.
We did 4 nights in Positano and almost extended our trip to 5 once we were there….. and definitely could have done 6 🙂 We both loved it so much.

We did this part of our trip a little bit different than most people, for a couple of reasons.
Most people that are making their way South through Italy would go to Rome from Florence and then end in Positano.  I changed it up for two reasons.  I wanted a break from all of the sight-seeing and go-go-go because I thought Rome would just be exhausting after all the big city things we had been doing.  I am really glad I made that decision because Rome WAS physically exhausting, but luckily we had relaxed for 5 days prior.
Also, getting OUT of Positano can be tricky.  If there is “bad weather”, the ferries do not run. (and this happened to us when we were leaving…. and there was not a cloud in the sky….)  Also, the roads are super windy and tiny, and taking a car from Positano to the Naples airport would have meant getting up extremely early, getting a car to Naples, and also having a layover on the way back.
I forgot that was my third reason – I didn’t want to go to Naples as everyone says its the worst part to be and I wanted a direct flight straight home.
So, because of all of that, we took a little bit longer of a train ride and bypassed Rome to go straight to Positano.
Then afterwards we went back North to end our trip in Rome.

I had planned a ton of the trip and almost all of it was very easy.
The one thing I could not decide on or figure out was the best way to get to Positano.
I was nervous about the ferries not running, but I didnt want to get packed onto a bus on the windy nauseating roads (which we had to do on the way out of Positano and was quite the experience, but more on that next post).
We had originally decided to take the train to Sorrento, and then take a bus or a ferry or something when we got off.  (because I couldn’t figure out the schedule of any of them in advance).
I changed our route while we mid-train.  Our train to the Naples train station was ending in Salerno…. and I realized while we were on board that there were ferries from Salerno that would take us straight to Positano.  So I did the whole “pass your end location” again and we went a little bit past Positano but got to stay on the fast train to Salerno which saved a lot of time in the end. I used the internet on the train to change our ticket for a few Euros to Salerno, and from there we went to the little travel agency at the entrance of the station to buy 2 ferry tickets to Positano.
It ended up being perfect.  We walked a few blocks to the water, sat and ate pizza at a place where no one spoke a drop of english and sat in the sun with some wine while we waited for our 2:00 ferry.
these two giant pizzas and a half bottle of wine was something less than $10.  loved it.

We had a 30 minute ferry ride and it was beautiful and we got to see all the little stops along the way like Amalfi and Praiano and it was like a free tour added right in.
The only obnoxious part was the group of University of Arizona study abroad kids ripping pulls from an Absolute bottle and hanging off the side of the boat (literally about to fall off) taking pictures in their crop tops absolutely WASTED.  It was horrifying.  I was mortified to be an American.
but the rest was great 🙂

When we arrived in Positano, there are all of these bag boys ( I believe in red shirts? ) asking where you are staying and you can pay them to bring your bag to your destination because, DUH, its like a million steps and who wants to lug their crap themselves.
Although I assured Kip I hadn’t heard from anyone that this wasn’t legit, in true Kipper fashion, he did not trust giving our bags to total strangers, sooooo his backpack went on my back and he grabbed the suitcases.  When the hotel manager saw us sweating carry our bags in to the lobby she definitely looked at us like we were crazy 🙂  And I looked at Kip like he was too, but we had our things and checked right in!
I talked last time about our incredible hotel, Hotel Miramare.
I can’t recommend the hotel, Rosita, and our room (221) enough.
See more on that here.
Rosita gave us the low down on places to go and things to do, and we changed out of our slightly sweaty clothes and went down the stairs to Brezza for apertivo.  Brezza is right off the main little pier, next to Chez Black and Three Sisters & all of that.  It overlooks the water and everyone coming in off the beach.  It was one of our favorite spots for the whole trip, their free snacks that came with our apertivo were incredible and it was such a great casual happy hour.   Loved it.
We went back to the hotel to shower and go for dinner, and we went up the stairs to a spot above our hotel for a delicious pasta meal (no clue what the restaurant was, I’m sorry! I didn’t write it down) before spending the rest of our first night on our balcony with wine.
It was beautiful all lit up at night.
It was the first of many simple days and perfect relaxing nights in Positano and we were already in love.

Our first morning, we woke up and had a delicious breakfast at our hotel.

The breakfast room was so gorgeous, and it was one of our favorite breakfasts of the trip – they had tons of options (and lots of hot eggs and bacon or sausage, which Kip didnt have everywhere so he was super pleased).
We had been told to avoid the main beach where all the boats drop everyone off, and instead to walk across the (gorgeous) pathway to the left to Spiaggia Beach.
It was heaven.

and we may have been one of the first people there the first day…. oops.
I didnt sleep in on this trip – I wouldn’t have wanted to anyway, but I was always ready to go by 8 am after likely tossing and turning despite multiple glasses of wine to the face the day and night before.
no complaints – more time to sit on the beach!
you have to rent the chairs, and depending on how close you are to the water the more euros per chair they will charge you.
the ones right up front were 8-10 euro, and cheaper as it went back.
also, WHY are the lounge chairs in America not like these? They have this little shade cover you can pull up so that you can perfectly shade your face and it makes it so easy to read.
I loved those damn lounge chairs.  The blue and white stripes didn’t hurt either.
we read and swam and relaxed on the beach until lunch time.
they also had a cliff jump that was fun to watch kip and everyone go off of, but no pictures because it was all the way around the side in the water so I had to swim around to watch.

For lunch, we walked back up a tiny bit to Lo Guarracino (two fishes) which overlooked spiaggia beach.
it was pricier for lunch, much pricier than the little places that were right on spiaggia beach (where we ate later, and were still delicious) but it was worth it for the view and a nice afternoon lunch break.
and they turned my pizza into a heart.  it was so cute.
seriously this little walkway to and from spiaggia beach was one of my favorite parts
we showered up and relaxed on our deck before going to one of the restaurants all the way at the top of Positano.
La Tagliata.
They send a car from the restaurant to your hotel to pick you up, and then will also take you back after dinner.
It was gorgeous and super romantical and my pictures display absolutely none of it 🙂

the food was so, so good and the staff was so sweet.
we had an insane risotto here that Kip talked about repeatedly.

are these posts wordy enough for you?
did I confuse you enough with my directions for how we ass-backwards made it to Positano?
Great! Then this post was successful!

Lifestyle, weekend recap

:: monday things ::

April 4, 2016

:: monday things ::
I hope everyone had a great weekend!!

thanks for letting me take a break from the blog last week.
every night after work we were having to run errands for our construction project in the basement – and the whole thing will likely be done this coming Friday! I’m so excited.
I can talk about it now because it’s finally almost over.
we have a large basement level with a big living room and our laundry room.  we decided to take the back half of the basement and put in a bedroom and a bathroom, and move the laundry to underneath the stairs.
here is a progress pic of the bathroom, and I will do a before and after when they are done!

I’m really glad we bit the bullet and did the renovation – we both are so happy with everything so far.
(and the adorable Irish men doing the work are the nicest people ever with the best accents and I just want to drink all day with them)
luckily my friend that lives right around the corner from us has been letting me wash my clothes at her place on Fridays while her and her husband are at work in exchange for walking her pup (slash her great dane pup walking me)
surprising Kipper for a quick hello.

We had a great time at our friends wedding this weekend in Evanston.
It snowed on and off all day Saturday and when it wasn’t snowing it was crystal blue skies – strangest weather ever.  And then Sunday it was sunny and 75.  Of course.  Because that makes sense.

worlds most comfortable dress, worlds most uncomfortable shoes, but they’re so cute I just have to.
the shoes worked GREAT in the snow. it was just perfect.

Brunch @ Corridor Brewery with friends on Sunday
the croque madame waffle was insane.

followed by a big day (and a big bill) at Home Depot for more basement items.
we got this vanity for the bathroom and I love it.

WHAT is Katy Perry wearing at the ACM’s?
horrible.

my new Rocksbox set arrived and I love it!

anything Kendra Scott is always a favorite, and the color of these earrings is gorgeous.
I also love the Y-shaped necklace, I don’t have anything like that already so I’m excited to wear it.
use code tayloroshayxoxo for your first month free!

one of my favorite instagrams of the week :

and also, the whole “turn on notifications” scare was then completely uneventful.
which I’m happy about.
However I am NOT happy about the snapchat update.
can’t deal with it! whyyyyy did they do this!?

this is where bloggers say “add me on snapchat”,
but those words will never be uttered here.
I embarrass myself enough publicly with the blog,
the real sadness and pathetic things displayed on my snapchat are things only a select few can see and continue to be my friend.

:: impromptu spring break ::

March 30, 2016

:: impromptu spring break ::
hi.
to be read in ross from friends “hi” voice because that’s how I’m currently feeling.
I wasn’t planning on taking the week off, but every night this week after dinner we have had to run errands for our home projects.
currently, picking out bathroom tile.
which you’d think would be like “wam-bam-thank-ya-mam”.
but no.
not us.  a full night of picking stuff out led to the tile guy saying half of it wouldnt work for certain things, so back we went.
anyyyyways….. this is a big project with a bedroom and bathroom addition (ya know, the one I’m not talking about, so we’ll talk about it later and I’ll stop talking now).
but no, its been fun and not stressful….. just want my nights back!

I’m hoping tomorrow night will not involve trips to hardware stores or tile stores or home depot or anything of the sort and that I will have some extremely witty and sarcastic commentary ready for you, but if things go the way they have been, I’m just going to have to chalk this week up as a loss and consider it spring break.
SPRING BREAK WOOOO
except with like, work, and endless errands.
and none of the good stuff like the booze and beach and sunshine and tans.
sooooo, let’s chat tomorrow.
and if I’m not here, it’s because I’m either questioning home reno life choices or I’m doing this
oh, and for the wedding this weekend I am going with this dress in dark turquoise and still debating  these lace up/tassel heels in nude.
the shoes are gorgeous.
however, the heels I am questioning because I can visualize myself ruining the “hot sexy heels look” by being that girl that is dying on the dance floor looking far from sexy trying to still stand in them.
ya know what I mean?
oh well.  beauty is pain.

:: coffee talk ::
discuss amongst ya-selves…..

:: DWTS ::
my current favorite is Nyle, the deaf winner of Americas Next Top Model, and Peta.
I was blown away.  I can’t imagine having that rhythm and dancing that well when you can’t feel the beat or hear a thing.  it was incredible.
and poor micha…… oh boy… it was not good.

during DWTS I saw a KITTY LITTER commercial starring
Katherine Heigl.
I meannnnn….. I know ‘anything goes’ these days….
i.e. Lisa Rinna and Brooke Burke in Depends commercials and such….
but….
:: A-Rod ::
Hell hath frozen over…..
because A-Rod is dating a smart, rich, silicon valley tech CEO and biologist.
:: katy perry and orlando bloom ::
I meannnnnnn geez y’all.

get a room.
and also, my apologies for this photo because when I looked at it I realized it was perhaps graphic…..I was like ‘wait a minute… is that what I think…..’
which then made me realize I definitely couldn’t erase it and it had to stay.
you’re welcome.

:: Stop. Please. Thank you ::
can we just stop with naked selfies in the internet.
please?
even if they are a joke or making fun of other celebs naked selfies.
just put clothes on people.  for real.
now THAT photo I was too embarrassed to post on here….. so you can just click.

:: RHOBH ::
All I cared about finding out this week was what do these women wear in Dubai…..
especially Erica Jayne…  but Bravo made me wait for it…..

we start at the global alliance dinner, honoring Yolanda, we get a real treat!
tommy hilfigers daughter Ally Hilfiger
who starred on one of THE BEST TV SHOWS EVER
Rich Girls.
If you are around my age (TWENTY TWO?), please tell me you loved this show.
if you need a refresher of Ally’s words of wisdom check here
Oh, and Gigi gave a beautiful speech introducing her mother,
but, like, Ally talked, and I was busy having a flashback remembering her gems of wisdom.

then, the worst human in the housewives franchise re-appears…. climbing out of her car in white underwear short-shorts and looking classy as ever.
and then in her “commentary/diary outfit”, she is dressed like a girl out of Austin Powers’ Goldmember ?
she makes childish, bitchy, un-funny comments during her few minutes on air, and I hope we are done with her because I JUST CAN’T.
ugh. get off the show brandi.

um, WHAT is this Delta One thing?
As a layover to Dubai, the women fly to Atlanta.
Then they walk off the plan into Porsche’s waiting to take them across the tarmac to the next plane?
WTF!?

I’m in the Atlanta airport constantly…. I’ve never even heard of this thing!
and I know I’m not rich enough to partake in said service, but come on! we little people should know about the fancy amazing things like this that we are missing out on!

OK! So they make it to Dubai!
This whole time I go back and forth in my thoughts from “no way would I ever travel that far to go to a place where I could be jailed for a gazillion things and required to wear a MuMu at all times” then to “LOOK AT THAT HOTEL! OH MY GOSH! LOOK AT THE ROOM! IT’S MY DREAM TO GO TO DUBAI!!”

How in the world does Kathryn end up rooming with Erica Jayne???
and why does Kathryn wear a short dress the first night when they are all wearing full body caftans? you drive me nuts Kathryn!
Erica Jayne he constantly amazes me with her mentality of “oh okay whatever you insult me at home, lie behind my back, throw me under the bus, etc etc….”
hasthag I love erica jayne.  no way would I be cool with rooming with her after all the BS she pulled over and over again leading up to this.
but then I see that their hotel rooms are the size of shopping malls and I realize they aren’t sharing a full size bed like my girlfriends and I when we stay at a hotel and can perhaps not even see one another.

THIS HOTEL.  I JUST CANT.
We see Kyle and Lisa’s “room” for 40K a night (WHO IS PAYING FOR ALL THIS?!)
and then it gets better when we see the UNDERWATER ROOM.
the water room is apparently a mere 8K per night
the ladies are like “oh hows your basement Eileen? are you claustrophobic?”

UM. NO. IT’S THREE FREAKING FLOORS.
WITH A GIANT AQUARIUM WALL.
IT’S HEAVEN!
read more and see more pics of their rooms on Bravo, or be a creep like me and go to the hotels website and stalk.
Alright that’s it. Gimme a Burka betches…… I’m moving to Dubai.

EDITORS NOTE :
as always, ignore my own blatant grammatical errors whilst I make fun of others poor grammar during coffee talk on a weekly basis.
#hypocrite  #sorryimnotsorry
I write these posts late at night while simultaneously watching Bravo, taking snapchats of my snoring husband, and making to do lists of everything I was supposed to do and didn’t do that day and likely won’t do the next day either.  or the day after that.

Lifestyle, tuesday things

March 22, 2016

:: tuesday things ::

image

:: tuesday things ::

all over the place today….. like most days…..

I wanted to finally share the cabinets yesterday so today I’ll share about the weekend. My weekend was one of the busiest I have had in a long, long time but all with great things!
Friday was an afternoon with one of my best friends kicking of her 30th birthday weekend with nails and things.  Then Friday night was my brother in laws birthday dinner at Bar Cocina (I love it there – casual and always good) and then a night of stand-up at The Laugh Factory.

Saturday I was back to celebrating my friends 30th and we ended the night with dinner at STK.

It was even better than my first time there – incredible music and food and great ambiance and people watching.   I am obsessed with this place.
We were going to go out to a bar afterwards but the bar was so fun at STK that we stayed. And thank goodness we did because it got NUTS in there.  People were dancing on the tables and the waiters were nothing but encouraging of it.    The best people watching was that 2 tables over from us was skinny ass JAMES KENNEDY with a blonde on either side of him.

this marks the second bravo sighting for me in 3 months….. I think 2016 is going to be my year people!!!
I am so mad at myself for not going over and taking a picture with him but I figured A. he’s just the WORST (aka the best to watch on TV) so why would I want to make his ego bigger  B. sure, he may be like “of course darling” in his accent and take a picture but he could also very easily C. be a total jerk and reject me and then I would have been embarassed even though WHO CARES.
I had lots of liquid courage in me at this point….. and by the time I had build up mayyyyybe enough to go over, he was leaving.
Ugh.  Next Bravo Celeb Sighting *please let there be one* I am DOING IT.
Sunday I had a hangover a baby shower for my girlfriend and then a family birthday dinner in the suburbs.   it’s so fun and crazy to have your best friends having babies.  It feels like two years ago we were in the dorms in college, not 10.  (insert tear steaming down cheek).  The shower – and the mom to be – were so beautiful.
thank you to dina for the pics 🙂

3 birthday dinners in 3 nights wore me out, and I am happily eating clean this week because I had some delicious food and booze ALL weekend long.
Yesterday was the 16th Birthday of *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached.
For those of you that didn’t know how in love with them I was AM,
this is the shirt I slept in the night before I got married, and  then wore all morning before putting on the cute-monogrammed-shirt that most normal adults who are getting married wear.
I would camp out for days for a reunion tour. Dayssssss.

Thank you for the sweet words on our Kitchen Cabinet DIY.
I’m so glad its over….. and now on to the next projects.
Particularly thank you to reader Rayna for sending me this post about the best gray’s to use in your house.  It is so helpful, and also so amazing that it is all Ryan Gosling related.
She, and Emily Henderson, swear by Benjamin Moore Gray Owl so I will definitely be getting a sample of that to throw up on the walls!

the grey we sampled up on the walls went Baby Blue RULLL QUICK when the white was next to it.  #fail

Dancing With The Stars started last night and it was SO GOOD.
I love that year round I have either Bachelor/Bachelorette/Bachelor in Paradise or DWTS going on for Monday nights.
This should hold me over until Bachelor in Paradise, quickly followed by The Bachelorette 🙂

 weekend outfits :
this zara dress has been a favorite winter go to
zara dress – it’s still in stores, but I couldn’t find online!

and this kate spade has been a great fall to winter to spring pick.
the fabric is lighter so it can work for a bunch of different seasons.
kate spade dress : same print, just slightly different cut

oh, and when you’re not feeling you’re best about your appearance, use that filter in snapchat and be like DAMN.  I look better than I thought.
who needs botox and wrinkle creams when this erases all of it for you!?
why can’t my forehead always look like that?
where has this been and how did I not find this sooner?!
(slash why can’t the world see me in this filter, but ya know, whatever….)
