:: crack of the week ::

January 12, 2016

:: crack of the week ::
this weeks crack of the week is on the healthier side, but just as delicious.

you know when the temperatures dip down really low….
and its freezing outside and you have your gloves hat puffy coat scarf ALL of it on to get out the door. …
what do you crave when you walk in the door from work ?
a warm cup of soup or chili
A Summer Salad!
….. no?  not what you crave? sorry.
for some reason this weekend all I wanted was this salad that I saw on pinterest and I just had to have it!! so while this definitely is something more fitting for summertime, it was great even in the freezing winter temps!

I even took a picture and put WORDS ON IT.  natch.
but seriously,
this recipe is delicious and light -the dressing is SO GOOD and would be great over any salad – and the Trader Joe’s package of Broccoli Slaw makes it an easy meal to throw together!

Summer Cabbage Slaw Salad
adapted from Simply Real Health
Honey Cilantro Hot Sauce Dressing:
Makes approx 6 servings
4 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons whole milk greek yogurt
3 teaspoons honey
2 teaspoons hot sauce (or more if you like spicy things)
1/2 cup cilantro leaves
Juice from 1 ripe lime (1 large or 2 small)
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Salad:
Makes 2 large servings or 4 side servings
4 cups cabbage slaw (TJ’s has a perched bag) or 1 head green cabbage finely chopped
1 bell pepper, any color, chopped
1 avocado, cubed
1 ear organic corn, kernels sliced off the cob
1 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
1 organic chicken breast OR 6 thin cut chicken tenders OR 1 medium piece wild fish OR 8 wild prawns to grill
a few cilantro leaves to garnish
Directions:
Make dressing first by combining all ingredients in a blender. Set aside.
Grill chicken, fish or shrimp of your choice on the stovetop or BBQ over high heat, flipping only when you get a good sear on the first side. Slice or keep whole to serve.
Add cabbage, chickpeas, corn,  peppers and avocado to a large bowl. Toss salad with dressing. Add grilled chicken, fish or shrimp over the top and sprinkle with extra cilantro to garnish.

……………………………………………………………

and totally unrelated, but I literally can’t read this without hearing the phone calls and their voices in my head and laughing (I’m sorry this is funny),

Four things that had to happen to start every conversation :
Brendan’s Mom : “Hello?”
Brendan : ‘Hello?”
Brendan’s Mom : “Yeah?”
Brendan : “Yeah?”

EVERY. TIME.

Lifestyle, weekend recap

:: weekend, resolutions, and things ::

January 11, 2016

:: weekend, resolutions, and things ::

image
hope you all had a great weekend!

I was home sick for the majority of the weekend. womp womp.
 In a way, a cold weekend in January is the time to be stuck on the couch, and I slept and watched TV pretty much three days straight.  Somehow I am still exhausted though – it’s like I couldn’t get enough sleep no matter what, but I am feeling a bit better today.
One thing I saw during my pinterest-perusings was A LOT of Valentine’s Day things.
PUMP. THE. BRAKES people!
I just took my Christmas tree down!  Today!
Can we at least get two weeks or something reasonable before we move on to the next Holiday?
I haven’t even posted my New Years Resolutions! we can’t be talking about Valentine’s Day!

so…. a week late…. here are some of my resolutions.
I like to keep things simple….. I’m a low expectations kinda girl 🙂

cook more

I make dinner for us every night but it’s simple things.  I don’t try new recipes as much as I used to, so I’m hoping to spend Sundays trying out new dinners and desserts like I used to.

read more

I go through reading phases…..

now that its wintertime hopefully I’ll be jumping back into it.

I’m currently reading this, and I read Amy Poehler at the beach and loved it.

workout outside the house / more classes

I already work out as much as I would like to – at least 5 days a week, sometimes 6.

I really need to start upping the workouts though; trying new things and pushing myself more.

As you know I watch my shows when I workout at home, so a lot of the workouts aren’t super intense and I’m not seeing results like I used to.

To help kick past the plateau I want to go to workout classes 2 days a week, which for me sounds terrible. AHHH. I hate leaving the house to workout and hate going to a class alone.  I currently go to a Pure Barre class once a week, and I only even started doing that when I went with a friend for weeks before every going alone.  It’s time for me to up it to 2, or to try a new workout class in general (but no way in hell will I try a new one alone, so Emily this ones back on you again to take me!)

no social media within an hour of bedtime

I did this last week and it was great.  I had a much easier time falling asleep.

I’ve gotten back into reading for a bit before bed and it’s helped.

less tv before bed

I meannnnnn we all know I’m not going to watch less television.

Why would I do that? Why would I do something so horrible to myself?

So, while I will still watch nine thousand of hours of TV per week (barely exaggerating), I WILL work on having the TV be off for at least an hour before bed along with no computer/instagram/etc.  except it’ll never work on wednesdays because the nights I write coffee talk go really late and that’s why I make absolutely no sense.  I don’t know what my excuse is for the rest of the time.

make better use of the weekends

this is obviously self explanatory, but I am a lazy S.O.B. a lot of the time and its like I work all week waiting for Friday and then somehow it’s Sunday night again.

I did practically nothing this weekend, but had the sick excuse, so hopefully next weekend I’ll do a bit more 🙂

and some blog related goals….

prepare posts in advance

I’m just the worst at this.  I am such a damn procrastinator and night owl.

get better with photography

 I am just literally the worst at this.  No explanation needed, you’ve seen it first hand.

comment on other blogs/reply to readers more

Notice the theme: I am just the worst at this. But if I prepare my posts in advance more I’ll have more time during the week to read my favorite blogs and comment and reply to people 🙂

do more fashion posts

I told myself I would do that this year….. but it didn’t really happen.  I’m a sissy pants and get self conscious so I half-ass it with the mirror selfies…. we’ll see what comes of it…..

:: bedroom updates ::

nope, not exciting blogger-esque bedroom updates like I’d hope.

realistic FML WTF OMG crap up in hurr.

soooo this is the current status of our bedroom while I watch the Golden Globes.

goodness gracious DON’T EVEN get me started.

hopefully the next update will include a beautiful photograph of our bed with the perfect pillows and a beautiful floral arrangement on the nightstand.

:: grand cayman ::

a reader asked about recommendations for grand cayman last week

(and look at me making good on it – check that resolution box!)

we have been going there for 10+ years and I absolutely LOVE it.

it is possibly my favorite place ever.

as for where to stay, anywhere on 7 Mile Beach – but definitely stay on 7 Mile Beach!

For restaurants :

Calypso is a must – and get the sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

  It is heaven on a plate.  Heaven.

We also love Deckers, The Wharf, Papagallo, and Grand Old House.

That is just a few – the restaurants in the Caymans are insanely amazing and we always go to the same ones instead of venturing to new ones that we hear such wonderful things about.  You really can’t go wrong!

For activities, I am lazy as hell 🙂 We sit around on the beach A LOT.

 It’s an awesome place to do nothing.

Oh, I rent paddle boards, that is always a good one.

But definitely do Stingray City.  It’s an amazing experience and year after year it never gets old – smack in the middle of the ocean, a sandbar with tons of wild stingrays that swim right up to you and you feed and hold.

in the picture below, all of the dark shadows are stingrays.

If you can, and you have a group big enough, charter your own boat. (boat behind me in the photo is not the one we chartered – you can get smaller simpler ones!)

Getting out there in the morning before any of the big Red Sail Sports and other boats come out is one of the most amazing experiences ever.  Just you and the stingrays.

:: obsession ::

I am a yogurt freak.  Like, I can’t get enough and I’ve been eating greek yogurt with granola for breakfast every day for years.

I was making a salad dressing for a new recipe (I’ll share tomorrow!) that needed plain yogurt and they only had the giant tubs.

The recipe also called for honey, so I figured the Honey Noosa yogurt would work.

UMMMM I now will be eating this yogurt plain for dessert.

It’s INSANE.

I just saw online that they have SALTED CARAMEL and I think I may die and go to heaven when I get my hands on it.

:: LEO ::

ummm I’m watching Leo win this golden globe and give his speech and I keep seeing Katy Perry…..

she’s in the front not even looking at him and listening to his speech.

GIIRRRLLLL you better check yourself!

PAY ATTENTION. LEONARDO DICAPRIO JUST WON.

RUDE.

and YAY LEOOOO!!!!!!! but I don’t think I can see that movie, no offense.

:: KTHANKSBYE ::

mmmmmmmk thats all for today.

have a great monday!

:: friday things : mini coffee talk ::

:: friday things : mini coffee talk ::
:: friday things ::
 mini coffee talk and more…….

we made it to Friday!  and we finished the first week back at work after the thrill of holidays and new years….. luckily for me it went by pretty quickly

:: mini coffee talk ::

a few TV related things that I never mentioned in coffee talk (and things I learned about from you lovely readers since yesterdays coffee talk…… )

The Cut (NY Mag) did a great article about The Bachelor and where it started and where it’s gone now.  For anyone that has ever watched, I think you’ll enjoy it.
The Cut Bachelor Article

even if you don’t want to read the whole thing, scroll to the graphic of “Bachelor by the Numbers” for a quick glance at the craziness of the last 20 seasons (36 including bachelorette, bachelor pad, bachelor in paradise).
and then get a HUGE LAUGH knowing that I have seen…….
you guessed it : every. single. episode. of. them. all.

:: RHOBH / Yolanda ::
one of you commented and told me about The Real Skeptics of TV and a woman seriously investigating Yolanda and her Lyme Disease.
and to that I say ‘nay nay fluffy’!
but still… I’ll read anything 🙂 you know…. they say reading and like, doing Sudoku or something will help me later in life to keep the brain fresh and working.
something like that.  I jest.

:: Vanderpump Rules ::
I have such a hard time deciding who bothers me the most on this show…. but lately it’s Tom Schwartz.  I just really can’t.  I can’t.

I think my #1 point is that he thinks he is SO FUNNY and SO COOL in his commentary like a 14 year old boy.  and don’t even get me started on his “modeling career”
I SERIOUSLY CAN NOT. CAN NOT.
there is also a constant competition for who has the lowest IQ on this show (serious competition.  seeeerious) but I think Brittany from Kentucky who moves out to LA to move in with Jax, the most repulsive and disgusting man on the planet, is the winner.
OH, and just because I saw this picture while looking for tom schwartz shirtless belly pictures (the things I do for you…..):

people.  is this not the face that kristin makes that makes you the most insane possibly of all while watching this show?  when she’s all giggly and ready to be a lunatic but pretending she’s not?  k…. just checking that we are all on the same page…..

:: Girlfriends Guide to Divorce ::
I love this show so much.  Just binge watched 2 episodes and man…. it’s getting a little deep.  Kind of very deep and emotional. So much going on.  Bravo scripted shows really know how to bring out my emotions.
It honestly makes me Ramotional.

:: Life in Pieces ::
if you aren’t watching it yet, you are missing out.

:: DWTS ::
UM whitney, the cutest thing ever, on dancing with the start married her high school sweetheart and just LOOK how freaking ADORABLE she is.

:: Peoples Choice Awards ::
I really disliked the majority of everyones looks?
am I wrong?
kate hudson was one of my favorites though

I’m off to whisper profanities in my first Pure Barre class since Thanksgiving.
they are so smart to charge you for late cancellations because girl scouts honor I would cancel every Friday morning if I could.

COFFEE TALK

January 7, 2016

COFFEE TALK
discuss amongst ya-sleves……

:: THE BACHELOR ::
Ummmmmmm REJOICE REJOICE in the NEW YEAR.
because with the new year comes a new season of the Bachelor, and we all know the Bachelor is 97 times better than the Bachelorette because we get TWENTY EIGHT CRAZY GIRLS that we get to watch every week find love make fools of themselves.

and for the first time since practically Andrew Firestone (for those of who haven’t watched The Bachelor for the last 15 years, Andrew Firestone was a sexy, rich, successful bachelor that no one knew about until he was on the show – BACK WHEN THEY KNEW HOW TO DO IT CORRECTLY)….. but I digress…. for the first time since Mr. Firestone, I am excited about a Bachelor!
Ben is physically my type, doesn’t seem to have any skeletons in the closet, and seems to be an all around normal nice guy.  Adios Farmer Chris, Juan Pah-loh, and Ben Flajnik aka Francine from Arthur.
I could go for a little less of the calling mom + dad, thinking you’re unloveable, talking about how you “drop in to see your teachers from high school”, and possibly being too emotional, but hey! you’re sweet and super hot and I don’t dislike you yet, so go get ’em Benny Boo Boo Boo Boo!!
editors note : for those of you that immediately thought of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days when reading Benny Boo Boo, lets be friends. k thanks.

we have all the ingredients we need for “the most dramatic season in bachelor history”,
 starting with names and careers and enough sparkly gowns to compete with senior prom.
Jami with no E.  you know trashy spellings of names make my heart go pitter patter
single mom of TWO (quite the twist ABC – TWO not just one) who looks and sounds no older than 18 herself.
professions that include : a chicken enthusiast, unemployed girl, “twins” – that is their listed profession
we have a girl who doesn’t speak english the entire episode, girl who enters on a hoverboard (also the unemployed girl, natch), an instagram stalker, and crazy-ass-dentist who enters with a giant rose on her head.  and thats just to name a few.
OH and a girl named “lace”

luckily, Ben kept the craziest one (that we know of thus far) LACE.
she is the most entertaining for viewers kind of crazy, and also the worst kind of crazy for ben; she flips out over such things as NOT MAKING EYE CONTACT.
 I meannnnnn HOW DARE HE.
oh em gee y’all this is gonna be so. damn. good.

I love that the show ends with Ben being like “soooo just to clarify, the reason you are upset is that I didn’t make eye contact?”
DUH BEN. why else would a lunatic be upset?! women are COMPLETELY reasonable people and dating dozens of them at once is the SMARTEST decision you have ever made! get ready for weeks of pure hormonal jealous crazy pants hell!

 ben : “I don’t understand I gave her a rose what the heck does she want?”
don’t worry ben…. she’ll just suck the life out of you and make you want to poke your eyes out with your fork.  thank you, shady ABC producers, on behalf of all of us, for making sure she sticks around 🙂
I hope she continues to wear hideous lace clothing just like her name whilst downing 10 glasses of wine.

the SECRET and DELAYED crazy is definitely going to be the news anchor.
I can just smell it.  I know it.  she’s definitely the “isn’t there to make friends” girl. drinking game: drink when girl says “I’m not here to make friends” or “I’m here for ben”
 in addition to drinking for the usual “journey” or  “here to find love”…. you know the drill…
she’ll be the one that is soooo perfect around him and then a crazy pants to the girls and they will despise her.

I know I am leaving out 95% of the show and I apologize don’t worry, we’re just getting started.  I cannot wait for next week!!!

{see end of post for bachelor related jackhole(s)}

:: Jimmy Kimmel Post-Bachelor ::
why have I not been watching Jimmy Kimmel on Mondays after The Bachelor/ette airs?
its AMAZING.  he and his wife are totally into it, and he calls these people out for everything.
UMMMM side note!!!
He also had my girl crush Jennifer Lopez on so you know I was through-the-roof excited. She looked beautiful as ever and talks about how her Vegas Show and how her  mom loves to gamble and won 2.4 million on a slot machine in vegas.
whaaaaat. and she loves marshalls. she’s probably lying, but she said it, so that means she must only shop at marshals right? they sell sparkle jumpsuits and plunging v-neck gowns like hot cakes, right!?
……and I am DEFINITELY the crazy stalker girl from the bachelor that freaked Ben out but instead for J.Lo.

jimmy then gives his/his wifes votes for the top 5 and winner of the show and I think he’s probably spot on,
 and then he says to Ben’s face “and then you’ll break-up within 4-6 months”
PREACH Jimmy PREACH!
just kidding… I totes believe in love!! love y’all!
 and the 4% success rate of this show……
and Ben is TOTALLY LOVEABLE and needs to BELIEVE IT,
so lets hope for at least a 1 Year+ engagement period…….

:: RHOBH ::
sooooo why did Bravo play new episodes of shows between Christmas and New Years??!! I had no idea and now am having to seriously catch up on things and with Making a Murderer homegirl aint got time for that!  My eyes are crossing!

anyways,
Yolanda goes to get her breast implants and leakage removed, and all she wants is David first thing coming out/waking up…. it makes me so sad for her.  Divorcing seriously must have been the worst thing ever for her – she is NUTS over him.
and seriously, ENOUGH with the cancer-gate-brooks-yolanda.
but I still can never remember the word they say –
i keep having to google it – Munchausen Syndrome.
am I the only one who had never heard of this before? never heard that word in my life.

so the ladies go to the Hamptons for a magazine cover party for Lisa VPump.
the place turns in to a night club at night, and all of the rooms surround the pool/club area.
it’s clearly every 40-50+ year old woman’s Hamptons Dream and makes TOTAL sense for her party and for all of them to be there.  Totally.  Yep.
So Lisa arrives and sees that the ladies rented a house in the hamptons to stay at instead because, you know, DUH. and Lisa is PEESED.
enough vanderpump! you wouldn’t have stepped foot into that place!
even BEFORE the 4 am raging noise – yeah freaking right!
editors note :I want to go there! it looked so cute and so fun!
and ENOUGH with asking kyle about her sister at the most inopportune times ever
what is wrong with you!?

:: jackhole(s) of the week ::
chris soules, jason mesnick, sean lowe “mentoring'” ben higgins
and sean,  thumbs up for being on Marriage Boot Camp with your wife; in case you didn’t realize, everyone else on that show is a raging lunatic with LEGIT marital issues and you possibly just became the most desperate 7 minutes of fame seeking couple to come out of bachelor history.
which is a prettttttyy difficult title to take.

and THEN there’s a MCDONALDS COMMERCIAL.
I mean? For real.
But All Day Breakfast at McDonald’s is the greatest thing to ever happen in the history of the world, so once again, Ben is my favorite Bachelor ever.

also, totally not coffee talk related, but the sale ends today and I just had to share 🙂
$7 Fleece Lined Tights at Neiman Marcus Last Call.

:: fleece lined tights ::
I’m not buying much this month to save some money  because I wear a giant black puffy coat over anything I’m wearing in these freezing cold anyway so who cares
but these are a necessity!!! its time for my first “why do I live here” of the year
WHY DO I FREAKING LIVE HERE!? AND ITS NOT EVEN BAD YET!?
I’m off to catch up on Girlfriends Guide to Divorce, Vanderpump Rules, and everything else…….

as always, ignore my own blatant grammatical errors whilst I make fun of others poor grammar during coffee talk on a weekly basis.
#hypocrite  #sorryimnotsorry
I write these posts late at night while simultaneously watching Bravo, taking snapchats of my snoring husband, and making to do lists of everything I was supposed to do and didn’t do that day and likely won’t do the next day either.  or the day after that.

:: workout wishlist ::

January 6, 2016

:: workout wishlist ::
workout wednesday // wishlist wednesday

There’s no time like the present to TREAT YO SELF,

and if you are jumping into 2016 with healthier resolutions,
 it can be much easier to get active in some adorable workout clothes – they are great motivation,
or you can treat yourself to some cute tanks or leggings after reaching your goals.

unfortunately I can no longer reward my healthy eating during the week and working out with constant beers and burgers on the weekends like I used to (damn it old lady metabolism setting in!)
 so workout clothes are a great reward instead!

if you’re going to sweat, you might as well look good doing it.

some of my favorite workout brands below :
Zella, Lululemon, Old Navy Active, and Fabletics

:: ZELLA ::
my current favorite for workout apparel.
leave it to nordstrom – if they make it, I usually love it.
{ live in 2 capri }

two outerwear options for the freezing cold temps setting in……
{ starlight jacket } on sale!

{ asymmetrical zip sweatshirt }

another piece I love and live in is the racerback tank. it’s so comfortable, flattering, and the fabric dries so quickly.
{ racerback tank }  more colors here on sale and here

:: LULULEMON ::

yeah, yeah I know, I know it costs a damn fortune.  I concur!
But I have had a pair of their pants for 6 years that have outlasted anything I own.
 It’s worth it.  It’s time to treat-yo-self, remember???

the pant that has lasted a lifetime…. I mean…. I probably should get a new pair, but I swear they still look great!

{ groove legging }

my other worth-the-money items of theirs are their hoodies and zippies.

{purple hoodie}  //  {striped hoodie} // {grey zipped}

:: OLD NAVY ::
I’ve found it’s best to order down a size, or your smaller size, for their activewear
old navy can’t be beat – amazing prices, constant sales every week, so many options and designs to choose from!
I mean, the point is to be sweaty and nasty in it, so a cute tank that also has a cheap as heck price tag (usually they start at $7) is always a winner.

{key hole tank}

{graphic tank}

{pink tank}

:: FABLETICS ::
my friend had signed up for Fabletics so I decided to give it a try.
my first outfit came and I just love it.
the leggings are super cute and comfortable, and the quality is as great as any of the other more expensive labels.
and I like that you can freeze your membership or cancel at any time – so no strings attached!

I got these leggings and long sleeved top

whats your favorite workout apparel?
I also really need some new sneakers and I think I’m finally going to go with Asics;
I have heard so many amazing things about them.

:: new year inspiration ::
image, and below images

if you haven’t been reading It’s The Little Things for long,
you may not know that I am usually a day or two (cough:or a week) behind in posting relevant things.
so while everyone is posting their new years goals and resolutions, I, of course, have not completed mine 🙂

but spoiler alert: one of them is to be more prepared when it comes to blogging….ya know, write posts in advance so I am not spending the hours before bedtime on a computer….not having to rewind the bachelor every 2 minutes to see what I missed by trying to blog for tomorrow, watch the show, and make notes for coffee talk at the same time …..  in case you can’t tell, so far I’ve been INSANELY SUCCESSFUL in this new year 🙂

but I have been good with other things: working out on Sunday and Monday, and meal prepping for the week. after two weeks of happily and not regretfully saying YES and MORE to every cocktail and french fry in sight, I consider 2 days in a row a success.

SOO while I work on compiling my list of goals to share,
I have some New Year Inspiration I have been perusing from around the web!
This is also my favorite time to Pinterest Stalk with the surge of health, wellness, organization, motivation, EVERYTHING.  I love it!
