:: New Year, New Promises ::

Happy New Year!
I’m hoping I’m not the only one treating today, the 3rd of the month, as though it’s the 1st.

It was amazing how it worked out with getting Monday as a second-Sunday, and not having to get back to real life until Tuesday 🙂 Especially because Sunday was filled with a headache and the sofa for most of the day.

photo of our living room via my Instagram

we hosted New Years and I made the champagne “bubbles” above!

I can post a tutorial later this week if you like!

I have a lot of posts for the coming week that are “new year” related, so bear with me.

It’s just too hard to wrap it all into one.

Plus, Thursday of course needs to be devoted to Coffee Talk entirely 🙂

So, for today I wanted to share some of my intentions and promises for 2017.

In 2016 I think I found my stride with fitness, got a lot healthier overall, and put myself a little bit more out there with the blog.

But there are tons of resolutions and intentions that I definitely didn’t follow through entirely on.  Some resolutions for 2017 below!

Read one new book per month

Yep. Starting with one of the most #basic of them all.

I used to be so good about this, but lately it’s been more laptop + magazines than books at night.

I read two great books over break (review to come soon!) and am reading my-boyfriend-andy-cohen’s book now every night before bed.

Try three new recipes per month

I love to cook, but I get in the habit of making the same dishes over and over.

And I feel as though in 2016 I didn’t branch out as much as I used to?

So for this year, I want to not only spend more time in the kitchen, but actually MAKE the new recipes I am constantly pinning on Pinterest.

Listen to a self-improvement podcast weekly

I have gotten really, really into my podcasts.  They have been a great way to zone out while driving, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, you name it!  I don’t know what I did without them!

Instead of it all being silly tabloid gossip, I am wanting to branch out to more thought provoking podcasts.

I love Joel Osteen and he does a great 30 minute podcast weekly, so I am committing to listening to that and to finding others to help me become a better me.  Let me know if you have any recommendations!

Be better with phone calls + messages friends

I used to consider myself fairly great with this, but now that I am the one that has moved away, I feel like I’m not checking in as often as I would like!! It was easy at first when we were traveling back up to Chicago frequently to forget that the lack of real face-time was permanent, but now that it’s been so long since I’ve seen some friends, it’s time to devote more time to keeping up those relationships.

and I have an annual Scottsdale girls trip next month with 3 of my cross-country loves so some REAL FaceTime will be amazing!

Try one new workout class per month

Over the last few years, I have committed to working out and no longer need to make that a resolution.  It has become of huge importance for stress relief and mood boosting for me, and I can say without a doubt I really do love to work out -SLASH-  mostly because I would be emotionally unstable without it.

What I am not good about is venturing out of my comfort zone.  Trying a new class, especially without a friend (I miss you Em!!), terrifies me.  So this will be a hard one for me!

Better balance with Nutrition.

I’m going to be doing a whole health + fitness post since I love that stuff so much, but one thing I do want to focus on more this year is having more balance with my favorite fried foods.

I finally learned accepted recently that no matter how much I work out, my metabolism does not love me like it used to.  No matter what.  Literally – I tried everything.  NO MATTER WHAT.

So…. Balance 🙂

but living somewhere that has Chick-fil-a is extremely difficult…… because sadly I know firsthand that a salad does not balance out a large waffle fry dunked in ranch and polynesian sauce.

Really dive into budget and finances

I want to make a big spreadsheet with EVERYTHING – down to the monthly Netflix payment – to see what I am really spending a month before any of the fun extras.  And then of course to compile the cost of the all of the fun extras.  I used to always set a certain percentage into savings each month and now that our expenses are different than they were in Chicago it’s time for a money-mindset reset!

Have a better nighttime routine/Better sleep hygiene

Seriously this is where I am horrible and never, ever keep this resolution.

I would stay up until 2 am every night if I could…. I just don’t get tired at night!

I know that the main thing I need to do is turn off ALL electronics at least an hour before bed, but that is so hard for me because that is when I tend to enjoy blogging and Pinterest and reading my favorite sites the most since I have the most energy.

Ugh.  It’s a vicious cycle.

BUT.  I am determined! I need to at least give it a try.  I think maybe I won’t toss and turn for an hour before falling asleep if I actually try to really shut down.

That’s why I want to do more reading before bed as I mentioned above, but as my husband knows, that too can be a gateway drug for me.  Reading doesn’t make me tired – it makes me want to keep reading and reading and reading and not put the book down.

…….. I really am such a child

Have a better Blogging schedule

This one I fail at year after year 🙂

and it goes along with the nighttime resolution above, and the quit procrastinating resolution below.

I like writing at night.  I feel my best self at night.  But I think I could enjoy my nights more if I did a bit more on the weekends for the blog and planned a bit better throughout the week.  I also feel like I could have much more content than I have now if I planned a bit more….. because the list of ideas that come to me at night never get touched again until nighttime (and then my husband makes me turn off the light and close the laptop  so I can’t keep him awake…. so really… like most things, I just blame him.  This blog would be AH-mazing if he didn’t make me quit tapping on the keyboard so he could sleep :D)

Also, with the blog, I want to :

put myself out there more

(I know say this everyyyyy year, but I’m an introverted extrovert)

connect with my readers more

work on my photography skills

work on images for posts and improve the blogs aesthetics

more fun posts (!) with new subjects and more serious posts with more writing

PROOFREAD MY POSTS. (I know, I know. I swear I have a business degree from Miami of Ohio and am not a complete grammatical dumbass)

Watch less television

Don’t worry!

It’s not what you think!

Well…. it kind of is?

I have no intention of stopping watching the shows that I love and discuss on a regular basis.  LORD NO.  I would die.

With the addition of podcasts into my routine, I have realized how much time I spend with the television on, even if it is just as background noise.  I want to get better about listening to more music and podcasts while doing productive things, even blogging, instead of having the television on.  When I go the music route or podcast route, I have a much happier and fulfilling day or night.   I also think I would be able to finish blog posts in half the time if I didn’t have an HGTV show I am half-ass watching on in the background.

…. but don’t worry…. the good stuff STAYS.

Print photos off of phone, make albums, and frame for the house

This drives me nuts about myself.

What’s the point in taking photos if I’m not going to do anything with them?

DO SOMETHING WITH THEM.

Tackle Home Projects

We owned our condo in Chicago and I loved it so, so much.  But one thing I realized when we sold and moved faster than we ever anticipated was that I never got around to so many of the projects that I had planned for our place.  Even though I know we will be in this house for many years, and I love it already, I don’t want to keep putting things off longer than necessary.

basically, quit procrastinating.

QUIT PROCRASTINATING

I am the biggest procrastinator ever.  If you are a long time reader, I’m sure you know this.

It’s time to BUCK UP.  I’m a grown ass woman. sometimes.

I would like to think I’ve gotten better…..

but really I think it’s just our move that made me get better?

Actually, I think the move made me get better with a lot of the things above? It wasn’t even me intentionally doing anything…..I am worthless.

What I mean is….. our life is so different here and we aren’t constantly out and about with friends and we can’t step outside and walk to a bar or restaurant or shop at the drop of a hat.  It’s just…. different.

I’d like to say it’s that we drink far less than we used to, but I think it’s more than that 🙂

I started working out more because let’s be honest I have more time on my hands.

I cook more because there aren’t 75 million restaurants I want to go to, and there isn’t the option of walking to Potbelly’s and having my favorite salad or sandwich in my hands 3 minutes after thinking about it.  Or sushi.  Or Starbucks.  Or a liquor store within a 60 second walk…….

Basically, our slower paced life is allowing me to do a lot more of the things I’ve said I’ve wanted to do, so it’s time to stop procrastinating and really DO IT.

Go for more walks outside because I can.

blah blah blah……

I really went on a tangent there, and I swear in my head it was going to come full circle, but now I feel like I lost it.

But. Quit Procrastinating.

Get up earlier.  Get sheyite done!

I’ll pretend you all know what I mean……

I’ll quit while I’m not ahead and have already written too many words that have probably gone unread.

Plus, Kylie says it best.

Happy New Year!

moving weekend, and our last weekend in chicago is finally here
image
well, it’s my last weekend, but my husband has been living in Atlanta for a couple of weeks already.
I just didn’t want to share that on the internet that I’ve been alone for a month…..
you know, because tons of creepy men probably read my blog daily, and I just wanted to make sure to be as safe as possible  🙂

OH I jest, but really, it was just wrong to project “HEY! I’M ALONE!” on the internet.
I mean, I’m a bad ass, but I may or may not have been locking my bedroom door at night and like sprinting into the bathroom in the middle of the night and sprinting back to lock the door.  Like a true adult living on her own.
Bad. Ass.

so Kipper gets back in town today and I am very excited to see him.
and I think he’s also very excited to see me….. because he’s been bored out of his mind.  A couple days hours with me and I’m sure that feeling with quickly begin to fade 🙂
I am also excited to just be done packing.

Packing a three story condo all on your own is no small feat…. and there’s a lot of things I didn’t consider like How do I get this heavy ass box out of the kitchen now that it’s packed? Oh wait, there are 200 heavy ass boxes and I can’t lift any of them?
Where do I put them so that I can actually walk through the place?
But not to worry, like I said, I’m a bad ass.  I got it done.

So, I hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend! Hopefully it’s filled with fun and food and sunshine!  We have lots of rain coming our way, hopefully not torrential downpours during the actual filling of the moving truck like we had the other night, but nothing I can do about it.

oh wait! yes there is!

I’ll be back next week when things are settled down in Atlanta!
see you guys y’all soon!
the ‘you guys’ I’ve picked up over the years needs to leave my vocabulary ASAP!

:: new adventures ::

:: new adventures ::

I hope you all had a great weekend!

I’m finally sharing the news I’ve been keeping from you for several weeks.

With us fixing up our condo the last couple months you may have already suspected, but Kip and I have sold our place and are moving.
image
The bigger change is that we are leaving Chicago and moving back down to my hometown of Atlanta!
image
There are a lot of emotions all over the place right now.  We’ve discussed moving South for about two years, and it’s just been a matter of when.  We love Chicago and love our lives here – but realistically we don’t want it forever.  And the months and months on end of freezing cold really start to take its toll.  Especially when you aren’t as young and fun (aka as much of booze hounds as we use to be – I know – imagine how much we used to drink if I’m saying we are pretty lame during the winter months now :D) We knew it was likely going to be a “leaving earlier than we want” or “stuck here longer than we want” situation.   Kip has been wanting a job change, and finding something new in Chicago was likely going to keep us here for several more years, which was longer than we had planned for.  So you guessed it – a new job in Atlanta came our way which was amazing – and that was the push we needed to get ourselves moving.
I’m so excited to be going back home, but in all honestly,  at the moment it’s very overwhelming.
literally the only thing that can even come close to explaining it is this:

Throughout the last few weeks, I’ve realized I am amazing at denial 🙂
 It is my coping mechanism.
Because there has been SO much going on and so much to do to get our renovation finished and our place perfect and on the market I am kind of just not really realizing what is going on.  I’ve just been going through the motions and checking things off the to-do list.
I literally was getting boxes from my boss’s place yesterday because they just moved and I commented on something with work when I will no longer be here.  Like, I’m getting moving boxes and forgetting I won’t be at work anymore. I’d say it’s been 95% of the time I am fine and busy and focused on things, but then in the middle of a conversation with a friend over the phone about the move I will start sobbing hysterically.
Or as I type this, I cry.

You know – totally normal – I am like pure zen and emotionally stable right now.  Clearly.

This will be my last week at work so it’s really putting it all into perspective for me – I am really sad to be leaving my job and the people, because I don’t think I will ever find anything like it.  I’m so lucky to go to an office everyday and love it – but now it will be Kip’s turn to get to experience that and I will find a new place to hopefully love.
Also, I know Kip is leaving his family and hometown whereas I am going to mine, so I have an added level of stress wanting to make things good for him and have him be happy and settled and comfortable.

In a way, I feel like leaving Chicago is like a break-up.
We know this is the right thing to do, and we know it is what we want, but it doesn’t necessarily make it any easier.
It’s like the boyfriend you love so much, but you know at the end of the day you aren’t going to marry him, so at some point you have to cut the cord.
SooOOOoooo.
I could clearly ramble on and on but I’ll stop myself.
Typing all of this out is making it very real and making my denial very difficult 🙂

We are super lucky that our place sold immediately when we put it on the market, and we will be in Atlanta in about two weeks.
I know most of this post sounds like I’m not very excited, but I am 🙂
I just have a really really really hard time with change – even change that I want – and preparing to leave the life I built for 8 years here (plus the 4 at Miami of Ohio, since that is how I ended up in Chicago to begin with) makes me sad.
I keep reminding myself that one of my best girlfriends left Chicago over a year ago and I still see her and am just as close to her – and the same thing with one of Kip’s best guy friends.
It’s not the location that maintains the friendship – and I have plenty of friends I haven’t lived in the same city as for the last 8 years and we are just as close.

I’ll show the final pictures from our amazing renovation tomorrow – I was already so madly in love with our place, and of course it made me love it even more.

So, none of this came out as eloquently as I had hoped 🙂
I know Coffee Talk doesn’t show it, but occasionally I can write well and this was one of those times I was hoping to verbalize my thoughts a bit better.
I think my emotions are keeping me from writing this the way I want it but whatever – I have other things to worry about, like packing up a 3 story condo.
 hashtag fun times

I’m excited for us to take on this new chapter in our lives !
It’s crazy that after talking about it for so long we are actually doing it – and that the time is finally here.
it’s crazy that we are adults and making life decisions like this – when the heck did this happen?

editors note : if you live in atlanta, and are PNF material (potential new friend), please know I am totally joking and not emotionally unstable at all.  well….. shit who am I kidding…. not making any promises 🙂

and now, to end, some cheesy motivational quotes to give me the monday motivation I need to get through this week.

:: life lately ::

The last of my big weekends away has passed 🙁 I think I will actually miss being at the airport every 5 seconds….. maybeeeee.
I had a long weekend in Scottsdale with girlfriends this past weekend and loved it so much! It was incredible – the weather, the food, hiking Camelback mountain (making it all the way and then knowing the rest of the weekend was about relaxation, fun, and cocktails)

I ordered a selfie stick off amazon because I was dying to get one and use it lets be honest for our hike of camelback.
I actually lived in Scottsdale a few years back after college for work so it was SO much fun to be back.
even the cactus knew we were coming. PAH-REACH cacti.
and two and a half hours later, we had make it to the top and back down, and brunch and beers and a full weekend awaited us.
Friday night we ate dinner at Sumomaya
and OMG I am not kidding when I say we LOVED it so much.
The music and atmosphere was a close second to the insanely good food.
outfit : I am obsessed with this BCBG dress.  I wore it with a brown leather braided belt to define the waist, and its a miracle worker how flattering and slimming it is.  5 pounds slimmer the second you put it on I promise you.
// BCBG dress //

both Friday AND Saturday we ate brunch at La Grande Orange because it was so good we didn’t even want to bother eating somewhere else.
We had so much girl time laying out and laughing our heads off.
It was the perfect weekend to recharge the soul.
except for the raging headache I had on Sunday morning and the fact that I stayed up late drinking around the outdoor fireplace every night…….  but whatever, my version of ‘recharging’ I suppose.

I started reading a gift I was given for my birthday :
Nora Roberts The Liar
and I LOVE IT.

If I wasn’t falling asleep during half of the plane flight home from Scottsdale, I’d be almost finished with it.
I’ll give a review when I’m finished, but spoiler alert, I already am saying it’s a great one!

if you follow me on instagram you saw this, but the weekend before last I hosted dinner and my monogrammed china arrived just in time!

I set the table with the china and our wedding crystal and it made me oh so happy.
our china is from Fragile Gifts in Atlanta (who were seriously a dream to work with).

hopefully our cable and internet problems are remaining in the past,
because last week was ROUGH.
me, last week, without cable or internet

I have LOTS to catch up on 🙂
