:: Home Updates, Draper James, and Tuesday Thoughts ::

Some random tidbits for Tuesday!

:: HOME UPDATE ::

We moved into our house in September/October of last year (it was a slow and gradual move!) and have known that we needed to replace the back deck since we bought it.  The current situation is old and rotting wood, but it worked for the time being.
Here is a photo from the previous owners in the property listing :

Our dream was to have a deck with a screened in porch.  Living in Atlanta we can be outside year round, and we knew it would be such an amazing thing that we would use every day.  Not in the dramatic sense, but it would be “life changing” for us after all of the years of cold and snow to just sit outside on the deck with a fireplace (we hoped!) and maybe a TV over it for me 🙂
We got bids from two separate contractors over the last few months, both of which were double what we had anticipated spending.  So we figured it just wasn’t going to happen.  We live in a 3 bedroom 1950’s ranch, and no matter how great our area is and how much the property value increases, we can’t just pour money into it that we would never get back.  I am obsessed with our house and have no plans to leave for many years, but we can’t spend money like it’s a forever house when it definitely is not.

Luckily, a friend at book club heard me say something about the crazy high bids and gave me the name of her contractor that only does decks.  (The first two people were home builders and contractors that did much more than decks!)
He came and met with us about 2 or 3 weeks ago and I am happy to say that he gave us something much more in our budget and we are able to go forward with the project.  To say we are excited is a huge understatement! Kip has wanted this since the second we decided to move South and I am so excited that he is going to be able to have it.  I know he will live out there! (He literally sat in the bed of his truck to read on Sunday afternoon because he said the bugs were too bad in the backyard but he wanted to sit outside….. I think he is just that obsessed with the damn truck, but still).

The plans are for construction to start early June and they said it would only take 2-3 weeks.  We are doing a screened in porch for the majority of it, with a smaller portion unscreened, and right now we have plans for a fireplace + TV.  I keep waiting for the bid to go higher than what we got or for there to be some mistake…. so we will see what actually happens….. but for right now I just can’t wait to be able to sit out there – bug free!
The bugs in the South are seriously the worst thing in the entire world.
Give me a huge rat in the alley ANY time.

:: SPLURGE VERSUS STEAL ::
This color combination is one of my absolute favorites.  Ever.

//  SPLURGE  //  SAVE  //

:: FITNESS ::

Reading about Goop @ Nordstrom led me to “Foam Roller Extraordinaire Lauren Roxburgh”.  I have been so bad about foam rolling lately.  As in nonexistent.  And I can tell.  I am super sore and sensitive.  I know I need to get back to it, and reading about how foam rolling can actually make you skinnier and look better (what!?) is just the thing I need to get back on that torture device of pain.
I mean…. if Goopy Paltrow says it works, it must be true, right?
The reviews on the book Taller, Slimmer, Younger are mixed – everyone says that without a visual it is too hard to understand.  So I went found tons of videos instead!

Check out more of her foam rolling routines on her YouTube Channel.

:: REESE’S DRAPER JAMES @ NORSTROM ::

Speaking of Goop having a pop up at Nordstrom,
now Reese Witherspoon’s line Draper James is available at my favorite department store too!

Draper James is filled with seersucker, gingham, and pastels.

What more could a girl need!!!
My favorites are this dress, this shirt, these sunnies, and this cute little apron!

It is all just so feminine and perfect for Summer!

ONE     //     TWO     //     THREE     //    FOUR
here is a close up of the pink and blue so that you can see the gingham + seersucker!

//    PINK GINGHAM    //    BLUE SEERSUCKER    //

ONE     //     TWO     //     THREE     //     FOUR

ONE  //  TWO  //  THREE  //  FOUR

//    GINGHAM SHORTS     //

Apparently Reese wore a lot of Draper James While filming Big Little Lies ;
she was always in the cutest outfits.

ps. I miss Big Little Lies.  Did I admit to all of you that I read the book the day it came out, which was hopefully a long time ago, because I couldn’t remember for the life of me how it ended. So when I was watching the show it was just as exciting for me as when I read the book.  What kind of moron doesn’t remember the ending of this kind of book?

But it made it so much better watching the show!
I also could just not have been more obsessed with her character.  I wanted to be her BFF.

Do you think I worked enough gifs into the end of this post?
Me neither……

Happy Tuesday Y’all!!!

:: Tuesday Thoughts ::

Today’s post is just all over the place.

I am a monogram lover through and through.  If it isn’t moving, put a monogram on it!
Moon and Lola always has such gorgeous pieces. I have a pair of their monogram stud earrings that Kip gave me for Christmas one year, and I am always falling in love with more and more.

I follow them on instagram and when I saw this finial I freaked!

How stinking cute is this!!??
They have so many design options for the monogram and for the finish.
I’m of course in love with the tortoise shell!

For any brides to be, this monogrammed hair clip is GORGEOUS.  It’s a little pricey, but would perfect for a special touch on your wedding day.

A few food related items :

One of my new favorite grab-and-go meals is this salad from Trader Joes.  I make my own mustard dressing since the dressing is more calories than the salad itself, but it is delicious and super easy to take to work if you don’t have time to pack a lunch.  I add grilled chicken when I have it on hand too.

Next up on my “Recipes to Make” list is this Skillet Cheesy Chicken and ‘Rice’  from Skinnytaste.    I’ve been on a cauliflower rice kick lately and this will be a quick meal to whip up.

I’ve been too lazy to make the full version of the “Tone It Up Bombshell Spell/Meta D Drink”, which is a metabolism boosting morning drink with apple cider vinegar and grapefruit juice.  Instead, I’ve just been mixing the two and throwing it back shot style.  (editors tip: Channel your inner 21 year old when you used to be able to take shots like a pro and not be completely repulsed.)

I made my mom’s famous chicken tetrazzini when hosting girls night last month…..

and all I think about when I make it or say it is that amazing Maury clip involving Chicken Tetrazzini that Joel McHale would play constantly on The Soup.  I really miss him and The Soup.  He cracked me up.  (He also did a glorious job playing Whitney clips frequently, like the shopping for sunglasses clip or just the classic screaming of “BOBBY!!!”).

I really want to add all of the Joel McHale clips as well… but I’ll save you.
I mean, the things you learn at The Sarcastic Blonde. The education is top notch.

A few clothing related things :

This dress from last summer that I got in several colors has been on repeat again.
It’s so comfortable and easy to throw on and run errands.
It’s under $35 and comes in a gazillion colors and prints !

// SWING DRESS //

 I love this tortoise shell necklace from J.Crew and the way that they layered it with another large piece.
// TORTOISE SHELL NECKLACE //
Isn’t it so stinking pretty!?!?
// TORTOISE SHELL NECKLACE //

Not surprisngly, I fell in love with this blue + white cropped top when looking for Italy wedding options. The material is tissue thin – it’s heaven.  I was hoping to find a skirt to match it as an option but so far all the skirts have been too heavy or just not right.

// STRIPED SHELL //

I love this bracelet set for summer!  So fun and a great price for all 5 bracelets.

// BRACELET SET //

My sister and I went to lunch at JCT kitchen and went to some antique/consignment stores afterwards to peruse.  This mirror was on sale for only $199 and I was SO in love with it!   I honestly don’t know how I walked away from it.
It was either at Stanton Home Furnishings or Sarah Cyrus right next door – one is consignment the other is not; the non-consignment store had gorgeous pieces too!

I have become a huge Harry Styles fan without even realizing it!
Two songs I am completely obsessed with right now are his off of his solo album.
I had no idea the song ‘Sign of the Times’ was his and I am loving it.

I also am loving “Sweet Creature”

Unfortunately I won’t be seeing him live because apparently his tour sold out in mere SECONDS!!

Since I have been spinning regularly since January, about 4 times per week, I decided to get a pair of my own spin shoes.  My friend that has her own spin bike said it would make a huge difference and she is right! I wasn’t even trying full out my last two classes since I have been getting over being sick and they were some of my best numbers ever.  It is so much less work (more effortless if that makes sense?) when it actually fits your foot and the cleats/bindings are tight.  I couldn’t believe the difference. And I am so glad to not keep putting on the rental shoes… putting on a still warm shoe just makes the hygiene freak in me repulsed.
I got the shoes off of Zappos and went to Peachtree Bikes to have them put the cleats on.

// SPIN SHOES //

As I was writing this post the doorbell rang and it was my Uber driver from Saturday night! I had left my hat in the backseat of the car and he used my initials to go through his past trips to find who it belonged to and drove all the way over Monday night to drop it off.  Can you believe it?! So nice!

and luckily Kip was with me or else I wouldn’t have answered the door (don’t worry Mom) and I would have felt so bad! Any one else never answer the doorbell EVER? but especially at 9 PM.
Flashbacks to that recent movie commercial were already playing in my head……

And with that, all of my ramblings for today are done!

I feel like it’s been so long since we’ve just talked 🙂

…… probably because it has been.
I can’t believe we’ve arrived at Christmastime celebrations!!!
This is the first time in 12 years I have had this warm weather for the Holiday Season and it has taken some getting used to.
But before I get into too much Christmas excitement (I’m watching CMA Country Christmas right now and LOVING IT),
 let me catch you up on the last week or two.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving week + weekend with your family and friends!
I had a post for last Tuesday catching up on lots of stuff and then the flu unfortunately hit.
So we’ll do the catching up now!

The weekend before Thanksgiving, my in -laws were in town for the weekend and it was a whirlwind.  They are the type that are go-go-go…. and I’m, well, as you probably can tell, not.
Hours of yard work and serious physical labor and they are smiling and asking “Okay what’s next!?!” while I’m ready to collapse and sleep for 18 hours from exhaustion.  I should have been popping Caffeine pills Jessie Spano style to prepare for the 3 day visit.

They helped us out SO MUCH with home projects.
On Saturday, we filled 35+ yard bags.  No lies.  After that I stopped counting because it was making me nauseous.
  We have a lot of trees in the backyard and a big pretty one in the front, which I thought was wonderful and beautiful, but the weekend of back breaking work had me wishing we were back in Chicago with zero yard and zero home projects whatsoever 🙂

update: the front and back yard are completely filled with leaves again. HELP!

We (aka not me but I did a great job pretending to be of assistance) planted flowers around our mailbox and also at the front of our house.  Everything looks so much prettier.
killer iPhone photos I know 🙂

We also finished getting cable set up in the den.
CABLE IN THE DEN! PAH-REACH.

These were the home projects that excited me the most!

KIP CAN WATCH HISTORY/DISCOVERY/SMART EDUCATIONAL BORING STUFF WHILE I WATCH BRAVO/ABC/TRASH AND BRAIN CELL KILLING SHOWS!
Woo Hooo!!!!!
I’ll share photos of the den progress next week.  We have the countertop for our built in bar area getting installed on Friday!!
I still have to go pick out new hardware and then it will be complete.

:: THANKSGIVING WEEK ::
I was supposed to be in Chicago for Thanksgiving, but the stomach flu hit hard last Monday and I was unable to function for days.  It was kind of nice to be home alone with my mom for a few days though, despite us not eating and feeling awful.  Kip went up to spend time with his family, and then I flew up on Friday to Wisconsin for his cousins wedding.  Unfortunately, I was in bed by 9 PM both nights and wasn’t myself, but it was still good to get to see everyone for a little bit and to spend some time with Kip.
I got to fall asleep in a big hotel bed watching Christmas movies and sleeping for 12 hours both nights so it actually was pretty nice.  Silver lining.

I am finally feeling better.  Food was a tough thing even yesterday, but I feel like I am finally able to get back to my workouts and normal weekly routine.
Positives of the flu: I hit my Cayman Christmas goal weight 🙂

I’d like to think it’s because I have been working my ass off, and that I barely drank any alcohol at all the last 3 weeks, but something tells me it’s probably because I barely ate anything without getting ill.  Unfortunately, I’m sure the moment normal amounts of food enter my body today that number will climb back up a few pounds.
editors note:  I forget how cutting out booze can really help things.
if only I didn’t like my Ramona Pinot Grigio so much I feel like I’d just have a banging bod year round.  Sometimes I envy those that have no desire for wine….. but then I realize….. No.  No I don’t.

To those of you reading that “no, no I don’t” in the Barry Gibb Talk Show SNL voice:
You are my soul mate and best friend.  Call me.

seriously I love these skits more than life.

My mom got me the new cookbook from my girl Ina Garten, Cooking For Jeffrey.

I’ve been unable to look at food until now, so I am excited to snuggle up with it and read it before bed like a real book.  I always read her cookbooks cover to cover and I know I’ll love this one even more with her sweet notes about Jeffrey.
If only everyone could be as happy as the two of them!

Completely unnecessary, but I just feel the need to share:
PSA: do not buy these giant avocados called Slimcados at the grocery store despite them looking so fun and yummy.

They are not.  They taste awful.  And I am very confused by them.

:: TV UPDATES ::
Ladies on London is back!! I’m excited because I really like the show, but how CREEPY were the commercials promoting this new season?

The singing of “Long live the Queen” and “My County tis of Thee” was simply cringe-worthy.  And seems SO unlike anything the ladies would ever agree to do.
I’m glad that mousy moody model girl Annabelle is gone and that Caroline’s sister-in-law Sophie (who LURVED to drink last season!) will be part of it this year!

Tonight is a VERY exciting night in Television.

Fixer Upper with Chip + Joanna returns!
I can’t wait!

ALSO.  GET EXCITED.
Scientology scandal abounds with Leah Remini’s new show premiering tonight!
I always meant to read her book, but hopefully she’ll reveal all we need to know in her show 🙂

I don’t know what it is about the Scientology stuff but it is so fascinating.  Plus, I love her and think she is hilarious. King of Queens will always be one of the greatest shows to ever air and Hallelujah for daily reruns.  We never get sick of it.

UGH.  I just feel like a weight has been lifted!!!
I finally got to write a whole post complaining about housework, discussing my favorite SNL skits, sharing too much information about the flu, and getting excited for reality TV premieres.
Also, congratulations and I’m sorry if you’ve read all the way to the end of this.
you know how I love to ramble when given the opportunity…..

tuesday things + buffalo cauliflower chicken

September 13, 2016

tuesday things + buffalo cauliflower chicken
I am on a serious cauliflower kick lately and make roasted cauliflower regularly for a side with lunch or dinner.
I made this Buffalo Cauliflower Chicken for dinner Sunday night.
I made a big salad with lots of veggies to go with it for dinner, but it felt like it would be the perfect lunch to have while watching afternoon football games!
I definitely will be making Buffalo Cauliflower this week because the Cauliflower tasted great with the buffalo sauce.
I lightened up the recipe with less fat cream cheese, cheese, etc to make it a bit healthier…. plus it’s naturally very low carb so
Also, I cooked a bunch of chicken in the slow cooker to shred, and used part for this recipe and the rest for my chicken salad wraps for lunch this week.
recipe adapted from Delish

:: Ingredients ::

1 head cauliflower, cut into florets
2 tbsp EVOO
kosher salt + freshly ground pepper
12 oz reduced fat cream cheese
1/3 cup Buffalo Sauce (I use Frank’s)
1/4 cup low fat ranch dressing, plus more for drizzling
1/3 cup sliced green onions, plus more for garnish
1 tbsp garlic powder
2 cups shredded chicken (use rotisserie chicken, or I did slow cooker and shredded)
1/2 cup shredded low fat cheddar cheese
1/2 cup shredded gouda

:: Directions ::

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
In a baking dish, toss cauliflower florets with EVOO and season with salt and pepper.
Bake until tender, about 20 minutes.
Reduce over to 350 degrees F.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, stir together cream cheese, buffalo sauce, ranch, green onions, and garlic powder until combined.  Set aside.  Toss cooked and shredded chicken with roasted cauliflower in baking dish and spread the cream cheese mixture on top.

Top with shredded cheddar and gouda and bake until cheese is completely melted and bubbly, about 20 minutes.
Let cool 10 minutes, then drizzle with extra ranch and garnish with green onions.

Some serous Blouse Goals below. Love.

//  STRIPED BOW BLOUSE  //

We haven’t moved in to our new house yet but have started making some progress.
Kip has been traveling a ton, so he was there for the first time since our final walk through and did some painting and repairs for us!
I am trying to avoid the painting as much as possible… if you remember from our kitchen cabinet redo + then our reno prior to selling in Chicago, I am trying to contribute in other ways 🙂
We are replacing the floors in one of the rooms with a new hardwood to try to match the rest of the house so I am very excited for that! I’ll share progress with that and hopefully we’ll be in soon!
I also found these two bar stools at the Ballard Outlet and love them.
Luckily living in Atlanta, we have easy access to the Ballard Designs Outlet store.
These were on sale for $45 EACH, and remind me so much of the far more expensive Serena and Lily stools that I drool over.  And they are super comfy if I do say so myself!
Ballard does have them on sale on their regular site, but locals, they had tons at the outlet store and are 1/4 of the sale price online!
I also love these backless bar stools!

Did anyone see Finding Prince Charming last week?
I’ll discuss it on this week’s Coffee Talk, but it was SO. SO. GOOD.
image
The best part was that the first night the suitor could pretend to be one of the group of 15 guys and see how they behaved without knowing he was “the bachelor”.
That, and a lot of the guys are super hot too so that helps 🙂
It’s going to be REALLY good. ‘
some turtleneck sweater dress love for fall :

I love a cute workout tank.
Pardon the french in the one below, but these are too cute.

So! First things first!
What are your thoughts about The Bachelorette?

I know there was lots of talk all along about it being Jordan, but were any of you surprised?
Do we think he is genuine and that they will beat the Bachelor Odds and make it down the aisle?
I’ll share all my thoughts Thursday
(cough cough: she’s too good for him don’t trust him as far as I can throw him),
but I really liked this season (mostly just because she is so adorable and to see what she would be wearing!)
the only look I wasn’t obsessed with was her after the final rose look!
image via caryfetman instagram

if only the drape in the front covered the whole front! I didn’t like staring at the one boob and I would have LOVED it if it did a little upside down V drape instead.  but she still looked gorgeous….

Also, THAT RING!
image
oh em gee be still my heart.  gorgeous!

Some random links for the day :

I can’t get over how amazing the twins from Sweet Valley High still look at 40.
They look like they haven’t aged a day.
Set your DVR’s ladies, because
Toddlers and Tiaras is back.

and before you judge, watch this preview clip and tell me you don’t want to see this stuff.
if for no other reason than the pageant coordinator with Ramona eyes.
step aside little ladies, theres a new adult star to be born.

but seriously, watch the one minute clip all the way to the end because the pageant coordinator’s comment just made my morning week.

Returns Wednesday August 24th!

Chipotle is opening a burger joint and I am counting the minutes until it makes it’s way to Atlanta.

I’m sure it’s no Shake Shake and In-n-Out Burger, but those are hard to come by too, so I’m sure its delicious.
seriously shake shack and in-n-out are so good it’s insane.   speaking of fast food things when are the new fancy french fries coming to the McDonald’s down here too?   ok I can’t discuss fast food anymore or I will hop in my car and make poor/slash/amazing choices…..

Bachelor Pad Starts Tonight!
as if I didn’t have enough trash to watch on TV already……
but no complaints here 🙂
oh wait, one complaint (shocker!)

I’m kind of all chad’ed out…. it’s like after Men Tell All we can tell he’s loving it and so I hate to keep feeding his ego.
oh well… I’m sure it’ll be reality TV gold!

:: TUESDAY THINGS ::
before I say anything, the most important things first.
UM the southern charm reunion last night :

kathryn’s outfit !!!!

kathryn’s faces above that necklace !!!!

kathryn’s outfit whilst making faces!!!!

so many words and no words for her last night!

The highlight of the weekend was meeting a new friend : a giant ass black snake at the pool, that came out of nowhere and inches from us and then when into our pool while my sister screamed so loudly that my mom thought someone fell into the pool and died and then we had to act like nothing happened so that my nephew wouldn’t be afraid of the pool forever and ever.

Once I had calmed down indoors and quit staring out the window in fear, I went on a search for Mr. Snake.

just kidding – not even close.

(like I said last week, where is a damn man when you need him!!! seriously people!! I can’t handle these things!)

I was going to do an entire post on this with a play by play but its too traumatic and even walking in the backyard has been terrifying although we’ve been *promised* he is gone.

Another weekend highlight was another 5 hours of House Hunting Sunday (on top of hours on the internet, if you’ve been there you know) with not much success, but better that past weekends (which isn’t say much)

I found a dream home online, great area so damn cute everything check check check, on the map it looked like it was far in off of a main street so we drive over and the back of a chik-fil-a is your neighbor across the street.  like literally when the people have their food and they are pulling out from the back, they could like drive right into your driveway.

 I know what you’re thinking because I thought it too…

this is a bad thing how? I mean…. who needs BFF’s at Potbelly’s by your place in Chicago when you could like CALL OUT to your BFF’s at Chik-fil-A from your front porch now.

the free food possibilities from these friendships could be endless…..

but Kip shot down my hopes and dreams.

 I’ve seen some amazing things in some listing photos like Kenny G on a giant screen with his name in huge letters on the TV screen cooing his hits, telling me to just keep searching 🙂

I meant to screen shot this snapchat but forgot.  apologies.

The worst thing about leaving Chicago : Leaving the Central Time Zone

I mean other things too I suppose 🙂 but for the sake of this post…..

This is KILLING my dinner + tv routine, and I don’t like change people!

It’s seriously impossible

in the two years that Kip and I have been married, I’ve slowly slowly slowly gotten better at turning the tv off early and getting in bed early and unwinding…..

Now ? I HAVE to watch shows until 11 because that’s when they end

IT’S HORRIBLE

Central Time Zoners, you have no idea how good you have it!

And just because I just saw it, Adele’s favorite break up songs

for those of you that, like me, love a good sappy love song

How is the 4th of July this weekend!?  June went by so fast!!
